CORNELIS PHILLIPUS HOOGERVORST January 6, 1953 - April 20, 2015 It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Cornell reached the end of his journey from this life, peacefully, with his family by his side, on April 20, 2015, after an arduous fight with cancer. Cornell will always be lovingly remembered by his wife Cindy (Furdyk), of 34 years; son David, daughters Alison (Lloyd) and Adriana (Josh) and cherished grandson Gabriel; siblings: Enaka (Mike), Phyllis (Steve) of Kelowna BC, Phillip (Erma), Reg (Mary), Nancy, Ben (Roberta), Eunice (Doug), brother-in-law Martin of Kelowna, BC, many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Casey and Maria and sister Patricia. Cornell's claim to fame was that he was conceived in Holland. He was born in Winnipeg and raised in West St. Paul, the second oldest of nine children. Always around vehicles, he took enormous pride in providing a service to others. When not working, he enjoyed family dinners and tearing up the dance floor at gatherings while finding relaxation in Sunday Nascar races or at the lake with a Louis L'Amour book. Opa loved to have Gabe work by his side teaching him how to do whatever task was at hand and introducing him to old time rock and roll. He looked forward to the annual Hoogervorst Family Reunion at Dorothy Lake where he enjoyed reminiscing. Cornell was a humble, caring, generous soul who worked relentlessly and made countless sacrifices to provide a quality life for his family so that his children could become the people they are today. A man who defined himself by his actions rather than words, one only had to glimpse into his kind, patient and mischievous eyes to know his exemplary character. Husband, Father, Opa, Brother, Uncle and Friend, he will be deeply missed by all, though he will never be forgotten. The family would like to thank Dr. Zoppa and the entire staff at the Selkirk and District General Hospital for their kindness and compassionate care. Heartfelt thanks to the many family and friends for all their support throughout this long journey especially to brothers Phil and Reg for walking beside him until his departure from this world. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Cornell's memory to the Cancer Society's Relay for Life ("Relay for Life", participants Alison and Adriana Hoogervorst). Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, MB, with The Ven. Godfrey Mawejje officiating. ".Love knows not its depth until the hour of separation". (Kahlil Gibran) "God's finger touched him and he slept". (Lord Alfred Tennyson) Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

  • Cornell, it can’t be that you have been gone SEVEN YEARS, sometimes it feels like yesterday and sometimes it feels like forever. You were the most non-judgemental Man who gave unconditional love, a very rare quality indeed. No one in this world had the best Big Brother like I had!!! You made sure to keep in contact with your four brothers and four Sisters no matter what was going on in your life. Your smile and your eyes filled with love for your family will never ever be forgotten. Big Bro, whenever life seems to get me down, I will see a Tow Truck and take that as a sign from Heaven Above that you are telling me,” It’s okay Little Sis, it will get better.” I will always be thankful for everything you have done for me, even when I didn’t ask you to! I will always have the best memories of you to comfort me when I grieve of your Passing. BigBro, I will Love you ♥️ for Eternity. Meet me when I come to the other side and greet me dancing to some great Rock and Roll! You always had the best dance moves!!! - Posted by: Nancy (Sister ) on: Apr 20, 2022

  • I was very saddened to hear of Cornell's passing. I had the fortunate opportunity to get to know Cornell through his work as a tow truck operator in Selkirk. He spent many evenings with our crews helping us out. As a result, I became friends Cornell and the rest of Terry's crew. Cornell made me laugh every time I was around him. I quickly learned that he was a humble and kind man. He spoke very highly of his family. He will be missed tremendously by a lot of people. RIP my friend.....thanks for being my friend !! - Posted by: Greg Zaborosky (Friend) on: May 13, 2015
