JOHN (JACK) FONGER With deep sorrow we announce the passing of John (Jack) Fonger on March 10, 2015 at St. Norbert Personal Care Home with his loving wife Joan, by his side. Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Pat (Wayne), Carol (Loris) and son Gary. His stepfamily includes, Shelley (Denis), Shawn (Cheryl), Jacquie (Jack), Judy (Scot), Janet (Mike); his cousin Barbara Leeds, 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also missing him are his in-laws, Audrey and Wilf Taylor; niece Norma (Pat); nephews, Jim, Bob and Christopher. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Les; brother Don (Viv) and sister Norma (Chris). Jack was born in Winnipeg, May 6, 1919. He grew up living in Thunder Bay, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Winnipeg. When the Second World War broke out, Jack was attending the University of Manitoba, which he left to join the Royal Canadian Air Force and served overseas. Returning from the war, he married Florence Nightingale of Montreal and settled in Winnipeg raising a family, while enjoying hunting and fishing. Jack was employed for 38 years by Affiliated Inspection Bureau, a branch of Grain Insurance and Guarantee Co. He managed many inspectors whose job it was to promote workplace safety, fire prevention and risk management of private Western Grain Elevators. Retirement for Jack was a life of visiting families east and west, cruising throughout the world, wintering in California or Florida, golfing, camping, playing bridge, cheering on the Bombers and working on his model train. This was a great pleasure for him and his grandchildren. Friends and family are invited to a Come and Go celebration of his life on Sunday, May 17 between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. with Tributes at 10:30 a.m. As his health failed, he needed the support of the St. Norbert Personal Care Home where excellent care, attention and friendships were provided with compassion and thoughtfulness by all the staff. We, the family, are forever grateful. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Suite 200-6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, Unit 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.
