ELVIRA (ELLIE) REMPEL With deepest sorrow, we announce the death of Ellie Rempel at the age of 88 years at Concordia Hospital, Winnipeg on Wednesday, May 6, 2015. She was predeceased by her husband Jacob and her grandson Daniel Dureault, both of whom she loved dearly and missed greatly. She will be sadly missed by children Edward (Jane), Linda (Al), Leonard (Carmen), grandchildren Sean (Lindsay), Remi (Carrie), Melissa (Lorenzo), and great-grandchildren Brodey, Jayden and Paige. Ellie was the first child born to Franz and Maria (nee Wall) Schroeder in the small village of Dnepropetrovsk in Ukraine, Russia on September 15, 1926. She and her family immigrated to Canada in 1930. Ellie met and married Jacob Rempel in 1954 and they settled in Starbuck, Manitoba where they built a successful life for themselves and their children. Ellie continued to live on the farm even after retirement, only moving to an apartment in the village of Starbuck when her mobility declined. Ellie was a kind and gentle soul who loved the farm, her cats and flowers (especially blue pansies). She also said she was the birds' best friend, providing them with food and water even when walking became more difficult. She recently became a loyal Jets fan and rarely missed a televised curling game. She spent many hours reading, knitting and following world affairs. Ellie was always interested in the activities of her family and was especially proud of Sean successfully becoming a journeyman for Manitoba Hydro. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the Macdonald Ambulance Service for their swift and caring response and the staff at the Concordia Hospital for their exceptional and attentive care of Ellie and their compassion for our family. We will never forget your kindness. A celebration of Ellie's life will take place Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Starbuck, Manitoba with interment to follow at the Springstein Mennonite Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Starbuck Community Hall. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3 or a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Dear Ed, Linda, and Leonard, my condolences and prayers go out to you, and to your families, on the passing of your mother. Although I never expressed this to you before, I always admired your mom, especially for her patience, and oft wished she could have been my mom. I would come by your family’s home and get a sense of peace and tranquility being in your mom’s presence for a while. I can honestly say I never saw her angry. Perturbed and perplexed, yes, but not angry. Perturbed and perplexed was often about one of the latest “adventures” Ed and I had had or were about to embark on as young teenagers. And as Ed can attest to, over one summer in particular, we had many, many, in succession. Your mom had the patience of a saint! Ed, I humbly offer to you, and the rest of the family, this: “A Step on the Road to Home.” When I come to the end of the road, And the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room, Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little..... But not too long, And not with your heads bowed low, Remember the love that we all shared, Miss me..... But let me go. This is a journey that we all must take, And each must go alone, It’s all a part of the Master’s plan, A step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick at heart, Go to the friends we know, Bury your sorrows in doing good deeds, Miss me.... But let me go.” - Calvin E. Kendall, S.F.O. My life is richer for having known your mother. Take care. - Posted by: Calvin E. Kendall, S.F.O. ((Childhood friend of Edward.)) on: May 11, 2015
