Date of Passing: May 14, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNICHOLAS SCHAFER May 7, 1932 - May 14, 2015 In sadness, the family of Nicholas (Nick) Schafer announce that we lost our beloved father, Opa and brother on May 14, 2015, after a lengthy illness. Nick was predeceased by the love of his life, Anne Marie, who passed away on November 13, 2011, as well as his parents, Nicholas Sr. and Theresa, and his-in laws Alfred and Mina Hummel. Nick and Anne Marie met in April of 1953 and were married in 1957. They built their first home and raised their family of four children in Selkirk, MB, eventually retiring in Little Britain, MB. Their loving partnership extended over 58 special years. Nick and Anne Marie were active members in the Little Britain community for many years. Nick's children, Terry Campbell (Neil) of Calgary, Eric (Marilyn) of Lockport, David (Christine) of Carberry, and Robert of Winnipeg, together with grandchildren Karl (Quelsa) and Cameron (Caity) Schafer, Paul Campbell, and great-grandchildren Kaylayna and Kohen, will forever miss their father and Opa. Nick was proud that all of his children obtained post-secondary education, something that was out of reach of Anne Marie and himself. Nick is also survived by his older brother Matthew (Claudette), and younger sister Rose-Marie (Joe). Nick's parents immigrated to Canada in the 1920s. They originally settled in the Woodlands area, before moving to the new homestead near Ashfield, MB. It was there, they worked tirelessly to carve out a simple existence, and raise their family. The family eventually moved down the road to the current homestead on Floodway Drive. This is where Nick spent most of his youth. His fondest memories were always of those early years on the family farm. It was there where he learned his life lessons, that he so much enjoyed passing on to all those who listened to his stories. Nick went to school in Gonor, MB and entered into the carpentry trade in his early years. He worked with many local contractors in Selkirk and the surrounding area over the years. He joined Manitoba Housing & Renewal Corporation in 1971 where he worked as a Building Inspector, retiring in 1994. Carpentry was one of his passions. He took great pride in everything that he built, and ensured that his special touch of craftsmanship was included in every project. No job was too big, or too small. His other passion was raising honey bees, delighting in sharing his honey with family and friends. When Dad retired, he made many special friendships through the Gordon Howard Senior Centre. This important network provided strength and compassion during difficult times. The family would like to thank all of the medical staff at the Selkirk General Hospital for the special care provided during Dad's final time. A special thank you also goes out to the staff on the Medical Ward for their kindness and understanding showed to all during these final days. Funeral Mass and interment will be held at St. Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, 105 Little Britain Road, Lockport, Manitoba on Wednesday, May 20, at 10:00 a.m. Dad, you can go now. Take roses and some honey. Mom is waiting for you! Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
