ELSIE CHERNIAK It is with broken hearts that the family of Elsie Cherniak announce her passing after a lengthy illness, at Gimli Hospital on August 4, 2015 with her family by her side. Elsie is survived by her loving husband Nestor; son Grant (Kim and granddog Monte); daughter-in-law Darleen, her granddaughters whom she adored, Amy and Kelly Saper (Matt); brothers Lorne Bohonos (Audrey) and Gordon Bohonos; sister Marleen Havelock, numerous nieces and nephews along with other family members. She was predeceased by her beloved son Craig; her parents Fred and Violet Bohonos and stepmother Anne. Mom was born in Winnipeg and raised in Sandy Hook, attended school there and, upon graduation, attended Success College in Winnipeg. On weekends, she would attend dances at the Winnipeg Beach Boardwalk, where she met the love of her life, Nestor Cherniak. They were married October 11, 1952 and were soon blessed with two sons Craig and Grant. She took great pride in being a devoted wife and loving mom. She was a wonderful cook and was renowned for her amazing meals at gatherings for family and friends. Shortly before her passing, she was overjoyed to learn that she was going to become a great grandmother. She was devoted to her Christian faith and had just celebrated her 50th year with the CWL. She loved being part of the choir. She appreciated the friendship of her "birthday girls" and loved them greatly. We will miss you so much mom, but we take comfort knowing that you are reunited with Craig, your parents and other family members that have gone before you. Funeral Mass with be held on Saturday, August 8 at St. Michael's R.C. Church in Gimli at 10:30 a.m. with viewing at 9:30 a.m. Interment to follow the service in the Polish Pioneer Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Alan Cherniak, Larry Bohonos, Bruce Bohonos, Dennis Ewchuk, Rick Ewchuk and Raymond Cherniak. We would like to thank the medical staff at Gimli Community Health Centre for their kind and compassionate care of mom. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Our deepest sympathies to Uncle Nestor, Grant, Darleen, Kelly, Amy and families. I've known this special lady all my life and happy my kids and I had the chance to visit with her at the hospital. When I read "amazing meals at gatherings", the annual Boxing Day fest comes to mind! Her dainties and all the wonderful dishes of food prepared and moved to the basement of her home and enjoyed by everyone that gathered at the many long tables set up near the bar! Many evening visits with my parents to their home and she always had quite the spread! Thinking of you all at this difficult time... - Posted by: Michelle, Ryan, Chloe and Ethan Douglas (Powroznik) (Extended family) on: Aug 06, 2015
