Born in Garson, MB, he lived in Walkleyburg and attended Bright Star School. At age 18, he set off to seek his fortune by travelling within Canada doing odd jobs such as farming, mining and logging. In 1942, he joined the army and became part of the Engineering Corp as a dispatch rider. Until he returned home in 1946, he served his country in England, France, Germany and Holland as part of their liberation. He spent one and one half years on the front line. After the war, he met Barbara and they married in 1949. They spent their first few married years in Winnipeg, then moved to East Selkirk in 1953. During this time, he worked at the Manitoba Rolling Mill until retirement in 1979. Charlie and Barb moved to Winnipeg in 1991, but then moved to Selkirk in 2002 to the Kiwanis on the Red. Charlie and Barb loved to travel and entertain family and friends. He enjoyed walking all over Selkirk and visited/made many friends along the way. He was most passionate about reading books. Also, thanks to the Kiwanis staff and a special thank you to staff at the Gaynor Family Library who went above and beyond to make sure his reading needs were met. Good memories of visiting Uncle Charlie and Aunty Barbara when mom and dad would haul us out there every weekend. Thinking back I realize how kind they both were to my sisters and me, and also what a good sense of humor they had. Our condolences to Linda and Bonnie and their families. - Posted by: Blair and liz mitzok (nephew and wife) on: Aug 19, 2015
