JENO BARNA KOSARY January 28, 1944 - September 10, 2015 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jeno Barna Kosary, husband, father, grandfather and friend, on Thursday, September 10, 2015 after a short battle with lung and bone cancer. Left to cherish Jeno's memory are his wife of 13 years, Julianna; his daughter, Maria Weir (Dan) and granddaughter, Victoria; his stepsons, Payton Brown (Marie), and Lanza Magian (Carmène), as well as his grandchildren Kadin, Akos, and Eva; his sister, Susan Kelly (Roger); his first wife, Maria Kosary, and many relatives in Hungary. Jeno was born January 28, 1944 in Budapest, Hungary. In December 1956, during the Hungarian Revolution, Jeno's parents decided to immigrate to Canada, choosing Winnipeg as their destination. Jeno grew up and spent all of his years in Winnipeg. In 1966, he married Maria (nee Meszaros); two years later, they had their daughter, Maria. Jeno was a passionate and hardworking man. His strong desire for travel led him to the railway. Starting with CP Rail, Jeno then shifted to VIA Rail, eventually attaining the role of Manager of Customer Services for Western Canada. In 1999, he decided to take early retirement and do what he loved most - travel and see the world. In his youth, Jeno was an avid soccer player, playing soccer in the Manitoba Soccer Association. He was a member of the Manitoba Soccer Referees Association and later became a National Referee. When Jeno retired from refereeing, his love for the game never stopped. He made it a goal to travel to Europe to watch his favourite soccer team play: Ferencvaros, Hungary's national team. In 2001, Jeno met Julianna, his best friend and love of his life. They were married in September 2002. They spent many wonderful years together, doing what he loved most - travelling. Jeno and Julianna spent their summers at the lake, winters in Yuma, Arizona, and travelled to Europe at least once a year. Jeno and Julianna made a permanent move to summer at their cabin at the lake, where they enjoyed hosting family and friends. Jeno would spend countless hours in his deck chair, reading with his dogs by his side or simply watching the birds. Jeno was a prominent and well-respected elder within the Hungarian community. He was instrumental in the opening of the Hungarian Canadian Cultural Society's facility, and eventually became President. For many years, Jeno was also very involved with Folklorama as the Coordinator for the Hungaria Pavilion. He was recognized by the Hungarian Consulate for his dedication and work in continuing Hungarian culture in the province. Jeno will be missed by all those who knew him. He touched many lives - his legacy will live on. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jeno's memory can be directed to CancerCare Manitoba, or to a charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Jeno's Life will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at E.J Coutu & Co. Funeral Directors, 680 Archibald St. You will be in our thoughts for always. We love you with all of our hearts. Rest in peace, Daddy.

  • The Hungarian community and indeed all of Manitoba has lost one of its great citizens much too early and too fast. Jeno's contributions are too many to mention and he would be embarrassed to hear of it. He gave freely and fully of himself, his friendship and his time to assist all who sought assistance. He did not do that for accolades or recognition. He did it because of who he was: an honourable, kind and proud Hungarian and Canadian. Rest in peace my friend. - Posted by: Thomas Frohlinger, Honary Consul of Hungary (Manitoba representative of the Government of Hungary) on: Sep 20, 2015

- Posted by: petofalvi magdolna (friend) on: Sep 15, 2015

  • Jeno was always a huge influence in my life. Our families spent a lot of time together in my younger years and Jeno was like a big brother to me giving me council and helping clarify issues I didn't understand. He was a Scout leader to me. When I decided to marry in the Hungarian tradition Jeno made sure my wedding went without a hitch. He impacted the Hungarian community in Winnipeg in ways too numerous to mention and touched the lives of many both here and in his homeland. He was an man of honor. - Posted by: Imre Naphegyi (Friend) on: Sep 14, 2015
