JOSEPH (JOE) NARCISSE (TOMAHAWK) FOURNIER With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Joseph Narcisse Fournier on September 4, 2015. Dad was born on December 14, 1925 in LaBroquerie, MB, the eldest son and second of 13 children to Narcisse Fournier and Alice (nee Balcaen). Dad was predeceased by four younger siblings: Henriette, Etienne, Gilbert and Alphonse. In 1953, Dad married our mom Mona Gendron. We were all heartbroken when Mom died of cancer in 1977. Many times Dad told us that he was grateful to Mom for blessing him with such a great family. The family circle grew to include our spouses and five grandchildren. Dad held many occupations throughout his life, including bush logging, power house carpentry at McArthur/Pine Falls, prison guard at Headingley and Vaughan Street Jail, repairing docks and boats at Riverside Marina and finally as a carpenter for the Manitoba Government, retiring in 1985 at age 60. In 1976, Dad built his dream log cabin in Woodridge and soon became the legendary "Tomahawk". It became his permanent home, weekend getaway for us, and a museum of antiques and collectibles, open to all visitors. Dad adored snowmobiling, quadding and his woodsman's life, building and operating sawmills, windmills, a teepee, cutting trees, logs, and constructing buildings for his machinery and "toys". Dad was renowned in the community for his carpentry and building expertise, which he was always happy to share with anyone who might want advice. Dad made many, many friends in Woodridge and surrounding communities. In 2009, Dad needed a knee replacement and moved to Manoir de la Cathedrale. He quickly made many new friends with the residents and staff. Dad was a loving, caring, friendly and positive person. He was well respected and admired by many. He was a natural story teller. It was life's simple things that Dad never took for granted. He repeatedly said how fortunate and thankful he was. Dad was a proud and devoted father, a man of strong faith, believing in God's wisdom and the beauty and peace awaiting him. We would like to thank home care and St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care staff for their excellent care of Dad. A special thanks to Manoir Cathedrale staff for their tremendous care of Dad. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Boniface Cathedrale, 190 De la Cathedrale Ave., Monday, September 14, 2015 at 10:15 a.m. Celebration of his life to follow on site. Private interment at a later date. Friends and family are welcome to sign the online book of condolences at ejcoutu.com. Dad, we will miss you forever. Love, Nicole, Joel, Jacqueline, and Richard E.J. COUTU & CO. FUNERAL DIRECTORS 204-253-5086

  • Very sad to hear of Tomahawk's passing. We visited him often in Woodridge while at our cabin. Mom would send us rice krispies for him, and he would ask where "Mama" was. My dad ordered most of the wood our cabin was built with from him, only the best! He was the sweetest person with the biggest heart! - Posted by: The Whitehead Family (Friends from Woodridge) on: Sep 14, 2015

  • Jos, my dear sawmill, windmill, john Deere and project friend, I will miss you lots! But I know you're doing OK, lighting up heaven with your radiant smile! They say it's just like Woodrige and Marchand up there, except no mosquitoes and no 40 below, nice!! God bless you and all those you have left behind. - Posted by: Claude Lord (Friend) on: Sep 14, 2015

  • My deepest sympathy reaches out to the Fournier family. Uncle Joe Tomahawk will be dearly missed. He was a kind, thoughtful, sweet uncle who always had a twinkle in his eyes. He was my parents' inspiration for building their original log cabin in Woodridge. Joe was a true pioneer and helped to not only engineer, design and build cabins, machines, and inventions but gave his heart in helping his neighbours with chopping wood, clearing snow and providing great advice on how to live in the great outdoors. I shall miss his stories and I shall miss him dearly. With all my love and with great sorrow, Susanne Gendron - Posted by: Susanne Gendron (niece) on: Sep 14, 2015
