Born: Apr 29, 1955

Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLESLIE MAY MALCOLMSON 1955 - 2015 On September 12, 2015 Leslie succumbed to cancer, which for nearly seven years she refused to allow define her. Leslie was born in Winnipeg on April 29, 1955 to George Morton and Marjorie May Malcolmson. Growing up in St. James, she graduated from The University of Manitoba in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts; in 1980 she received a Teaching Certificate. She and Simon Lucy were married on August 20, 1977. They moved to Montreal in 1980 where sons Malcolm and Alexander were born. From McGill University she obtained first her Bachelor, and immediately after her Masters of Social Work. Over the years Leslie worked as a substitute teacher, an ESL teacher at McGill, a hospital-based social worker specializing in psychiatry, and a social worker with the Canadian Armed Forces in the family support unit. She ran a private counseling practice and in 1994 was hired by the St. Boniface School Division where she worked until choosing to retire in 2008. Volunteerism was enormously important to her. Leslie held a strong sense of civic duty, believing we all have a responsibility to be active members of our communities. Starting as a hospital candy striper as a teenager, over the years she gave her time and energy to the International Centre, Tel-Aide (a Montreal crisis phone line), Scouts Canada, Habitat for Humanity, and the Winnipeg Police Victim Services Unit, among other activities. For many years she was a Canadian member on the board of Prairie Public Television. Leslie always lived life to its fullest, even more so in her later years. Travelling was a passion, taking her to the UK, Alaska, Tunisia, Sicily, Turkey, Barbados, Curacao, and many other locations. Not one for simple leisure, she immersed herself in the local culture and history of every place she visited. This joie de vive extended at home. Her gregarious nature and sense of style was apparent in all of her daily activities. She loved to host parties and held many celebrations for friends and family at her home in St. Vital. Always a lover of fashion, Leslie's mission was to dress her best and to inspire others to take pride in themselves. She founded the Hope Springs Into Fashion fundraiser, an event to champion awareness and resistance towards her disease, which she organized and hosted for two years. Her legacy will live on in the memories of those closest to her - borne ceaselessly into the past, yet forever here in spirit. Leslie was predeceased by her parents, stepfather Raymond Bower, sister-in-law Susan Lucy, and stepsiblings Michael and Barbara Bower. Along with her husband and sons, she leaves brothers Brian (Suzanne) and John (Marion) and extended family and stepfamily from coast to coast. In keeping with Leslie's wishes a memorial gathering celebrating her life will be held at the St. Boniface Golf Club, 100 Youville Street, on Friday, October 2, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Ovarian Cancer Canada, Winnipeg Humane Society or Habitat for Humanity. My wife, Carol and I send our sincere condolences to Simon and family. I returned to Prairie Public in 2000 and met Leslie at my first Prairie Public Board meeting. As a board member, Leslie gave excellent advice and council. She was full of life and energy, Leslie was a strong supporter of Public Media and I know she believed in the power of learning. Her support was much appreciated. We have lost a great friend. - Posted by: Steven Wennblom (Friend) on: Sep 29, 2015

Leslie was a strong and lovely life force to be reckoned with...it is an honour and privilege to have met her. Leslie and Simon showed sincere interest and support of my metal art and as a result, Tracy and I had occasion to visit her and Simon at their home and cottage and were always made to feel very welcome. We fully experienced their generous and warm hospitality. We extend our condolences to Simon and family. I can hardly believe that 'baby Leslie' is no longer with us. I can clearly remember the day she arrived home from hospital. We lived next door to the Malcolmsons. My Mother called me to the window to watch Mr. and Mrs. Malcolmson's car pull into the driveway.... I then saw Mrs. M. get out of the car with a bundle in her arms -- Leslie. There was a lot of excitement in the Malcolmson home with the arrival of a little girl. Her brothers were very solicitous of their baby sister. Later, being 4 1/4 years older than Leslie, I was asked to babysit her on a few occasions. She was a delight then and remained a delight as she grew into an intelligent, warm and fun-loving woman. I can only imagine how bereft Simon, Malcolm and Alexander will be without their wonderful wife/mother. Thinking of you, and of the happy memories I have of Leslie. - Posted by: Cathy Carlyle (Former neighbour) on: Sep 19, 2015

For may years, Leslie brought love, joy, inspiration and community to my life. Through all circumstances and opportunities in life, Leslie has always been excited and fearless embracing everything with curiosity, courage and a commitment to adventure, exploration and success for everyone around her and in her community. Leslie always made sure that people in her life felt safe, welcome and loved. In addition to a full, rewarding and superlative life of extraordinary commitment, contribution and accomplishment, Leslie took on her circumstance and created her Hope Springs Into Fashion foundation. Through this amazing initiative to contribute to research to cure her disease, Leslie also united everyone in her life as a community of all of us. It is an honour and joy to be part of Leslie's life, family and community which I will treasure always. I will truly miss Leslie's special and exquisite light in my life and will continue with her many extraordinary contributions and example in creating community and love with everyone in my life. Thank you Leslie and I love you to forever and back. - Posted by: Catherine Green (Friend and Potluck Partner) on: Sep 19, 2015

Leslie was one of the first people I met when I joined Habitat for Humanity's family selection committee. We did some of my first interviews together and she inspired me greatly. She was compassionate and thorough with each interview we did, I learned so much from her and I will miss her. I will be away for her life celebration but will keep her in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with Leslie's family. - Posted by: Brenda Carriere (co-volunteer Habitat for Humanity) on: Sep 19, 2015
