JOYCE ELLEN SUTHERLAND (HICKS) (nee McLEOD) Early Saturday, September 19, 2015 our much loved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and dear friend passed away. Mom had major heart surgery on September 8, one day prior to her 86th Birthday and was on the road to a successful recovery. Unexpectedly on Thursday evening after completing her walk she suffered a massive stroke and sadly never regained consciousness. For those of us she left behind our hearts will be forever broken. Mom leaves behind daughter Patti (Barb), son Jim (Barbara) and her much adored, much talked about grandchildren - Ashley (JP Meyer), Braden, Colin and Shane and her son-in-law Maurice. Mom is survived by the world's very best siblings - Fred (Penny) McLeod, Jean McLeod (Robert Johnson), Ernie (Janet) McLeod and Gail (Joe) Scalisi, as well as many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Mom was predeceased by the love of her life Robert Sutherland in 1991, our father Gordon Hicks, also in 1991, and her eldest son Darryl Hicks in 2008. Mom was a shy woman until she knew you. She would welcome you with offers of coffee and cake with a story or two. A guaranteed good laugh was always served. Mom was a strong woman who withstood difficult times and heartache yet always maintained a sense of humour. Mom worked hard, laughed hard and loved all her children unconditionally. We will miss her terribly. Patti and Jim would like to thank Vicki Ranson for being a great friend to Mom. The bingo halls, restaurants and coffee shops of Gimli and Selkirk, the casinos of Winnipeg and South Beach will never be the same without Joyce and Vicki hanging out. A Celebration of Mom's life will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, located at 600 Cambridge Street (located at the intersection of Corydon and Cambridge). A private family interment will take place at a later date. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

  • My cousin Patti is the most amazing daughter I know! Joyce was very fortunate to have such loving children like her and her brother Jim. I felt privileged to have supper with all of them, including Joyce's sister, Jean & Bob at my parents house in Gimli not even 3wks ago. Joyce's laugh, smile and stories were infectious. We all strolled down memory lane with her as tour guide asking for more! This is a tremendous loss for our family and its heritage. She will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Janine Fussey Baxter (Cousin) on: Sep 24, 2015

  • We are far away in miles, but close in our hearts during this time of sorrow. Joyce will live on as a kind and gentle lady. Her legacy shows in the generations to carry on. Sending much love, Margie, Shannon and Todd (Calgary, AB) - Posted by: Shannon Belyea () on: Sep 23, 2015
