RAGNHEIDUR (RAE) MARTIN It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ragnheidur Martin on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at the age of 99. Rae was born on July 13, 1916 on the family farm Arskogi in Riverton to Fridrika and Pall Vidalin. On August 29, 1939 she married Herbert and in the early years worked as a cook for his fishing gang until they built a home and settled in Hnausa, Manitoba. In 1951 they moved their home to Gimli where they lived until 1978 when Herbert passed away. They had three children, Richard, Carolynn and Theodore. She remained in her home until 2012. Mom was very active in New Horizons and the Lutheran Church groups. She became an avid bowler and earned many pins and trophies that attest to her bowling skills. Many certificates of appreciation for her volunteerism speaks volumes of how she was held in high esteem by many in her community. Mom was known for having an assortment of baking on hand at any time to serve with her famous "Icelandic coffee". The highlight of her year was having family and friends over after the Icelandic Festival parade, where Ribbon sandwiches and "Amma" bars became a tradition. She took great pride in her flower gardens and spent countless hours tending to those. She is survived by her brother David (Suzanne), sister-in-law Oskie, brother-in-law Charles Harkess; sons Richard (Helle) and Ted (Janet); daughter Carolynn (Gordon); grandchildren, Carmelle, Tim (Tricia), Kim (Trevor), Michelle, Nick and Juliane; seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. We have been blessed with her presence in our lives and we celebrate her longevity and strength of spirit. Goda Nott, Elskan, we will love and miss you always. Special thanks to the staff at Tudor House and all the special friends and relatives who have supported Mom through the years. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gimli Lutheran Church - 50 3rd Avenue, Gimli, MB with Pastor L. Skonnord officiating. Interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gimli Lutheran Church or Betel Home Foundation. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

  • Well Auntie Rae I guess the days are gone when we all could come down to Gimli for a slice of vinatarta and coffee or just sit around and have a chat. These sad days do come and now that the aches and pains are gone I hope you are now in a better place. Love from nephew Bill in Winnipeg - Posted by: Bill Elliott (Nephew) on: Sep 28, 2015
