GARY WILLIAM MATKALUK
Born: Aug 10, 1944
Date of Passing: Oct 11, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGARY WILLIAM MATKALUK August 10, 1944 - October 11, 2015 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, brother, uncle, grampy and friend. Gary passed away as a result of sudden cardiac arrest in the early hours of Sunday, October 11, 2015 at St. Boniface Hospital. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of nearly 44 years, Joan; daughter Tammy Burr (Joel); son Regan and grandchildren Ashlynn and Grayson. Also left to mourn is his brother Dr. Richard Matkaluk of Carlsbad, CA, his wife Connie and their daughter Lauren. Gary was predeceased by his parents Michael (1987) and Olga (2002). Gary had a fulfilling career with Revenue Canada. He was a dedicated civil servant and often told us that he truly enjoyed getting up and going to work every morning. He was very proud that his children also found careers that they loved. Gary retired in 2000 after 30 years of service. Shortly following his retirement, Gary discovered a passion for golf. He was able to hone those golf skills every winter as he and mom began spending each February in South Padre Island, TX. He looked forward to spending time with his SPI family every year. Gary was also a member of the Winnipeg Squash Club for the past 20 years. A trip to the club was part of his daily routine and he cherished the friendships that he made. Gary was always available to offer advice, he was our voice of reason and he had an incredible sense of humour. He will be missed. In keeping with Gary's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or CancerCare Manitoba. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU & CO. Gary will be missed. We always enjoyed our "cousins" get togethers at Victoria Beach, the fun times over dinners, golf, beach walks and the great time we had when he and Joan visited with us on the Island. We were so surprised that Gary took us up on the offer to ride Jasper, our quarter horse, and he did so with his usual enthusiasm! So nice to have the memories. - Posted by: Catherine Davidson and Gerry Person (cousin) on: Nov 01, 2015

Gary was one of those special people that you meet on life’s journey and you become friends for life. We met while enrolled in the CA program and became inseparable as we struggled with the dual goals of chasing girls / drinking beer and trying to complete our CA assignments. He was one of those people who I often thought of but never picked up the phone to call enough. Having left Winnipeg 45 years ago Marilyn and I were shocked and so pleased when he and Joan turned up for my Dad’s funeral in the late 1980’s. When my Mother passed last year I phoned Gary hoping we could get together while I was in Winnipeg. It turned out he had his bowel surgery scheduled for the day after the funeral but to our utter surprise he still came to the funeral. We visited him at the hospital after his surgery and each of us made a commitment to get together for a vacation once he was fully recovered. His passing is an opportunity lost but we will always have the memory of his quick wit, infectious laugh and dazzling smile. - Posted by: Gary Cosgrove (Close friend) on: Oct 31, 2015
