Kataryna was born to Maria (Gurak) and Mychaylo Mycio on January 26, 1926 in Tyskowa, Western Ukraine. Predeceased by her loving husband Anton, her parents and her sisters and brothers, Kataryna is survived by her devoted children, Christine Morgan (Robert), Mary Lohre (Peter) and Bohdan Opar (Tamara). Also mourning her loss are her loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Brent Morgan (Ana) and their children Quinn and Willem, Marla Morgan (Novi), Lisa Lohre (Allan), Leanna Lohre, Larysa and Oleksandra Opar. In her lifetime, Mom endured many hardships. Through it all, Mom personified love, strength and resilience. As a young woman of 15 years, she endured war years and survived forced labor camp. After the war in 1947, as a young bride, the family was again forced to leave their homeland and relocate to newly reclaimed parts of Poland. In 1966, the family made yet another journey. They arrived in Canada. In Canada they prospered. They were fiercely proud to be Ukrainian Canadian and celebrated that part of them every chance they got. Mom and Dad became devout members of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral. Mom became a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada, Institute Prosvita, the Millenium and Dumka choirs and supporter of CYM. Mom worked full time at the Municipal Hospital, yet she always found time to attend church, and spend time with her family and friends. Her home was always open to all, there was always coffee and fresh baking available for whomever visited. She was an amazing cook, baker, she could do amazing petit point. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She rejoiced in their successes, always expressing pride in who they have become. Prior to going to the Holy Family Home in 2013, Mom resided in Selo Villa. She loved living there. She found support and strength from her Ukrainian Selo Villa community. But, due to failing health, Mom relocated to Holy Family Home. She loved all the staff on 4A and appreciated the care she received. We, Mom's family, extend our eternal thanks to the Holy Family Home staff for your caring manner - you have made our Mom's last years of her life very happy and very comfortable. Panahyda will be sung 7:00 p.m. Wednesday November 4 at Sts. Vladimir and Olha Cathedral, 115 McGregor Street. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Thursday November 5 also at the Cathedral with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat Michael Buyachok officiating. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery. Pani Opar a dear and treasured friend to our Mom Stefania Pankewycz. When Pani Opar and our Mom resided in Sello Villa they would call each other every morning to check on each other. They were physical therapy partners walking back and forth down the halls and eventually up and down the stairs while recuperating from surgeries. When our Mom passed on Dec.26,2013 You her children brought your Mom for the Panahyda. It warmed our hearts to have seen Her come with her poor health and in such freezing weather. I thanked her for coming and she responded by saying, “ Jak to ne pryjty to moja girlfrendka”. Our sympathy to you all. I know our Mammas will look each other up in Heavenly Kingdom. I met Katherine in 1982 when my family moved to Winnipeg from B.C. We formed a friendship which was renewed at each family gathering. Katherine always had gentle words of concern, caring and understanding for me and my kids and I know she prayed for us. Thank you Katherine, for loving me in this way.
