AIME PHILIEN BARSALOU It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Aimé Philien Barsalou on Friday, November 20, 2015 at the age of 86 years. Following a sudden and brief time in the hospital, Aimé passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Aimé will be remembered by Olive (nee Mazure), his wife of 58 years. He will be missed by his children Cecile Stewart (Bruce), Suzanne (Ken) and Paul (Carol), and eight grandchildren, Megan (Ryan), Tyler, and Erin Steen; Heather and Ceilidh Stewart; and Lydia, Avery and Delaney Barsalou. Aimé was predeceased by his daughter Monique in 2008. Aimé was born, September 1929, to Camille and Justine Barsalou in Greenway, Manitoba (RM of Argyle). Aimé grew up in the Mariapolis area of Manitoba and moved to Winnipeg where he attended Collège Saint-Boniface. He was one of the first graduates of the Collège Saint-Boniface to enter the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba. He worked as an electrical engineer for the City of Winnipeg for 10 years, internationally in West Pakistan for two years, and for over 25 years at Manitoba Hydro. Aimé had many interests including painting, and computers (in the early years). Despite being colour blind he painted many landscapes and spacescapes that hang in many of our houses. He was a member of the Twenty Moods painting group, and had displays at the Manitoba Planetarium, Manitoba Hydro, St. Bernadette and the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain. After buying his first computer, a TRS-80 in 1980, he taught himself computer programming so he could manipulate three-dimensional images for use in his paintings. He was an extraordinary kite designer and flier, a passion he shared with Olive. Aimé flew his kites regularly at the Mint in Winnipeg and together they attended kite festivals across Canada, in the United States and Europe. His enormous three dimensional kites in the form of pterodactyls, witches, polar bears, Pied Piper, Mary Poppins and many others were perennial favourites at Assiniboine Park and abroad. There were many family trips ranging from Mexico to Alaska, British Columbia to the Gaspé and camping at Falcon Lake. In keeping with Aimé's wishes, cremation has already taken place and a memorial mass celebrating his life will be held on Thursday, November 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Bernadette Roman Catholic Church, 820 Cottonwood Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU & CO. FUNERAL DIRECTORS 680 Archibald Street 204-253-5086 ejcoutu.com

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Dear Mrs. Barsalou, I am sad to hear that your dear husband, Aimé, passed away. Aimé was a dear old friend of my father, Ray Marchand. Based on the obituary here, I guess they met at Collège Saint-Boniface when they were young and looking to the future. I have lovely memories of your family when either you all visited us in Ottawa, or we visited you in Winnipeg. I wish the best for you and yours, and offer my sincere, albeit belated, condolences for your loss. Denise Marchand, Ottawa, Ontario - Posted by: Denise Marchand (Family friend) on: Dec 12, 2018

  • Olive, even if we were far and even if we didn't see you both lately, we always had a thought for you and we still talk about those wonderful times we spent with you on kite festivals. If it is possible to give us a phone number, we will be very happy to call you and talk about that. Aime and you were kiteflyers we had great respect for what you did together. You were an example to follow. Yves and Anne - Posted by: Yves Laforest & Anne Clement (Kiteflyers friends) on: Sep 03, 2016

  • Aime was an amazing man. I was a novice kitemaker when I met him. I was new to Winnipeg, and new to kites. He introduced me to a world of amazing kite artists, and kite fliers who came from all around the world. I also became a kite maker/flier, and after moving from Wpg. looked for Olive and Aime at the hundreds of kite festivals we participated in over many years. His distinctive, original kites always drew attention and smiles from everyone. His kites were unique, as was Aime. He will be missed. - Posted by: elain genser (friend) on: Dec 12, 2015

  • Aimé's artistic talent and style of kite building was inspiring, brilliant, extraordinary and unmatched. He was a dear friend and he'll be greatly missed. - Posted by: Sharon Musto and Bud Taylor (friends) on: Dec 12, 2015

  • Aime was 18 years older than I. A great role model, he made the best paper airplanes ever. - Posted by: Philien Joseph Nick / Louise Cecilia Nick (First Cousin) on: Nov 24, 2015
