ADA VIOLET HOHS (HICKS, PATRICK) Suddenly on November 20, 2015 Ada Hohs passed away at her residence. She was 92 years young. She was born on June 18, 1923 in Peebles, Scotland and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1930. She leaves to mourn her passing her children Robyn (Don) Hoffart, Jean Bodner, and Bob (Helen) Patrick. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren Tom (Silvana) Patrick, Terry (Danielle) Patrick, Jennifer Ditchfield, Rob (Heather) Hoffart, and Beth Hoffart; her great-grandchildren Josh Bodner, Seth Ditchfield, Graeme and Evan Patrick, Brittany Eyben, and Georgia Patrick, special niece Donna (Norm) Davison, and many more nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her mother Barbara and father Percy Hicks, her husbands Tom Patrick (1954) and George (Ed) Hohs (2013), and her son George Patrick (1998). She was also predeceased by her brother George Hicks (2012), and sisters Roberta McKercher (2003) and Barbara Hicks (2003). Mom was a 46 year member of The Order of the Eastern Star, Friendship Chapter #67 serving in many positions over the years including Worthy Matron. She was ever proud and so fond of her many "Sisters" and "Brothers" in the organization, the Eastern Star being a big part of her life. Mom remained active until her sudden passing, it was hard to believe she was 92. Mom faced many challenges through her life, losing her husband Tom suddenly in 1954 being left to raise four children, the youngest only one month old. She first worked for CBC Windsor, Ontario as a trainee alongside newscaster Lloyd Robertson. She saw an opportunity to buy and run a restaurant in Peterborough and worked long and hard hours to provide for her family. It was there that she met George (Ed) Hohs and began a lifelong journey with her new love. They moved to Manitoba in 1959 finding jobs and determined to succeed and raise her children. She had a long career as a Secretary for Colgate Palmolive. Their love for the outdoor life eventually saw them buying a cabin at Star Lake where they enjoyed many years. They celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2010. A remarkable life together. Mom will be missed forever by her children but has left us so proud of her and with so many memories of a life well lived. We will be celebrating her life on December 1, 2015 at 2:00 p.m., at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Flowers are gratefully declined. If you wish, donations in her memory may be made to the Order of The Eastern Star, 52-525 Cathcart Street, Winnipeg, MB R3R 0S6. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Dear Jean and family, I am shocked and saddened by your mum's departure.. My what a wonderful and vibrant lady she was and will always be to me. I am so glad I had the privilege of knowing her and I always loved her sense of humour. Much love and thanks for the memories Ada. Love Cathy. - Posted by: cathy keeenan (friend and eastern star sister) on: Dec 21, 2015

  • I wish I could be there with my Auntie Violet as I liked to tease her with. We had an incredible bond for some reason. I remember a pair of pointed toe ankle boots that I adored as a small girl that I just had to wear and dance around in everytime we went for a visit. Aunt Ada was the one who bought my first pair of ‘real’ jeans, Lee jeans with a front fly. I remember that day so clearly. Just the two of us went shopping downtown at Eatons and then went and cried through Love Story. When I lived with the Hohs in Grade 10 Aunt Ada made me a cheese sandwich everyday thinking I loved them. I never did tell her that I hate cheese sandwiches!!! Aunt Ada was so strong when my mother passed away even though she was losing her sister. Aunt Ada told me that she would be my mother now and loved me like a daughter. I remember the phone calls we had with each other always ended with “If you need anything, anything at all, remember I am here for you, just ask”. Well the one thing I want you cannot give me…..one more phone call. You will be missed very much. - Posted by: Donna Davison (Special Neice) on: Nov 30, 2015
