Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILFRID HERVE JOSEPH FORTIER Peacefully, on Sunday, November 29, 2015 with all his family present by his bed side, at Actionmarguerite Youville Centre Taché, Wilfrid died at the age of 97 years old. Predeceased by his wife of 61 years Cécile and his grandson Marc LaRocque. He leaves to mourn his children Henri, Brigitte, Augustin and Véronique, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, his sisters and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. The fifth of 11 children Wilfrid was born in Sanford, Maine, USA. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Debden in northern Sakatchewan. Wilfrid quickly learned to work hard on the family farm. He was very creative and enjoyed inventing objects in order to work more efficiently. He loved woodworking the most and was a talented carpenter. He built a house, church and houseboat as well as countless chests and creative and useful objects. He also renovated and maintained his own houses as well as his children's homes. Wilfrid was a devoted and faithful family man with a strong faith and spirituality and he had a strong devotion to the Sacred Heart. Reciting the rosary was a daily ritual in the family and it continued to be with his wife Cécile. He was a man of conviction with strong values and beliefs. He believed in justice, honesty and trust. Wilfrid changed careers several times in his life. From a one room school teacher, owner of a general store to a psychiatric nurse. At 41 years of age he decided to study social work at the University of Manitoba. He graduated with his masters and worked several years in that field until accepting a position as a public servant with the Federal Government. After 11 years he was ready for retirement. During this time Wilfrid read many books on spirituality, did crosswords and wrote a book on his mother's life "Notre mère". This work took him four years to complete. Wilfrid was very involved with his parishes, Précieux-Sang and Sts. Martyrs Canadiens. He was generous with both his time and money. He was also a member of AMMI for over 36 years and was dedicated in supporting the missionaries in Northern Canada and other countries. Papa was proud of his faith, spirituality, language and culture. He instilled these same values in his children and grandchildren. He was happiest surrounded by his family. He had quite the sense of humor and loved to laugh. He had "joie de vivre" and was a great storyteller. He was also very competitive in cribbage. Everyone in his family was taught the game and several games of cribbage had to be played at each get together. The family would like to express gratitude to the employees of Actionmarguerite Saint-Boniface. Our papa was very happy and comfortable on the 4th floor ABC. He felt loved and cared for. In keeping with Wilfrid's wishes, cremation has taken place and a funeral mass celebrating his life will be held on Thursday, December 3 at 2:00 p.m. in Precieux Sang Church, 200 Kenny Street. E.J. Coutu & Co. We would like to extend our sincere sympathies to all of Uncle's family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. We remember Uncle as a man who was always ready to tell a good joke and a good game of crib. When Conrad and Gilberte moved to Chase BC where Uncle and Aunty were living at the time. They were very generous in helping out Mom And Dad to find a place to live and welcomed us all when we came to visit. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Jacques and Rachelle Paquette Red Deer AB.
