DOUGLAS JAMES FINGLAND Tragically on December 9, 2015, Douglas James Fingland passed away. Doug was born October 2, 1956 in Winnipeg, MB. His early education was received at Clarkleigh, MB in a one room school house. While in high school Doug developed into an athlete who excelled in most sports, playing baseball with the senior ball team and the Lundar Falcons senior team at a very young age. But Doug wasn't all sports, he cherished any time he spent working with his dad, whether it was working for Fingland Concrete or just learning the correct way to "pick berries"! In 1980 Doug married Connie and they started their family. Doug thoroughly enjoyed passing his passion for sports onto his children by coaching ball, hockey and high school sports as well. He also passed on his unique and clever sense of humour to his kids, who sometimes were the only ones who "got it". Regardless of whether in the electrical field, volunteering or working at home, Doug always did it with the utmost integrity, worked hard at what he was doing and was honest to a fault. He became a jack-of-all trades and was proud of the fact he had built his own house with his father and Uncle Ed. He loved his community of Lundar and enjoyed volunteering with Grettir, Lundar Minor Hockey, Clarkleigh United Church, the Lundar Seniors Home and at the Lundar Museum. He was mindful of others and gave generously of his time to others who needed help. Doug's memory will be dearly missed by his wife Connie; children Derek (Vanessa), Devon (Matt Watkins) and Layne; grandchildren Angus and Clara; mother Mabel Fingland; siblings Barb Smith, Brian (Dorothy), Darrel (Rhonda), and special auntie Lauraine Ganton, uncle Al Goertzen, as well as many other family and friends. Doug was predeceased by his father Clarence Fingland. Cremation has taken place with interment to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Doug's memory can be made to the Lundar Museum Society Inc., c/o Isabelle Thorvardson, PO 265, Lundar, MB R0C 1Y0 or to the Lundar Sportsplex c/o Grettir Co-op Inc., PO Box 334, Lundar, MB R0C 1Y0. • My deepest condolences to Connie, family and all who loved Doug. I last spoke with Doug several years ago when I was trying to get him to come and visit with Rick Arnason and my family at the Edmonton ThorroBlot. Unfortunately he could not make it and we did not manage anything else. More recently I learned he was back in Lundar. I deeply regret we did not meet again on one of my regular visits back to Lundar. Over the years I have remembered Doug fondly many times to my friends and family. Several times regarding his brilliant school art assignment that had a cut-out photo glued inside a drawn-in billboard to the right of a drawn-in highway leading away into the distance. The photo was of an attractive woman, and the caption for the page said "Keep Your Eyes on the Road". Doug was aninspirational athlete who invited me once to fill-in to make the minimum for his hardball team on a road trip. Much less than hit the ball from the pitcher, I only new it had passed due to the thud in the catcher's mitt. With Larry Johannson and Rick Arnason the four of us invented a fake rock band called "Jimmy Needle and the Threads" for a talent contest, I think to raise money for our basketball team or school jackets. Doug was "Polyester". In the middle of air-drumming he took a call on his fake shoe-phone ("Get Smart" fans understand this - a predecessor of the cell phone, but carried in the sole of a regular shoe). He then threw it over his shoulder to the back of the stage. We learned later that it had hit, or came close to hitting, someone's guitar. We were very fortunate that night, in many more ways than our third place finish. Doug's memory is sure to live long, and I consider myself blessed for having had him as a great friend in my youth. - Posted by: Lorenz Sigurdson (Lundar School Friend) on: Dec 23, 2015

  • Indeed we are still reeling with this sad news, and are feeling very sad for Connie, Devon the boys, and Doug's Mom. We know without doubt that Doug loved you all very much So often when speaking of you we heard pride in his voice, saw that smile and twinkle in his eyes, and heard his laugh .. and distinctive voice. For sure, we'll miss Doug's presence and friendship at the lake, and will always remember him as a kind, sensitive, caring, supportive, honest, and gentle man. Go with love, and rest in peace Doug. - Posted by: Glenn & Noreen Duncan (Friends) on: Dec 22, 2015

  • We were so shocked and so very sorry to hear about Doug. He was an all round great guy. Sometimes his humour was a little hard to catch. I have many fond memories growing up with Doug, Sunday visits to "the farm", building a fort out on the property with downed trees, showing him around Winnipeg when he and Barb came for city visits, Doug staying with us while going to Red River College, Doug's surprise arrival from Edmonton for our wedding, and more recently our Fingland Family Reunions. All great memories!! Doug will be greatly missed. To Connie and family, Mabel, Barb, Bud, and Darrel and your families we extend our heartfelt sympathy. - Posted by: Deb and Bruce Johnson (Cousin) on: Dec 22, 2015
