GARY THORNTON SMITH April 30, 1940 - January 10, 2016 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Gary. He will be missed by his wife Peggy; his son Bradley (Jodi) and daughter Tannis (Jay) Proulx; his grandchildren Katelyn and Derrick Smith, and Andie and Jimmy Proulx; his sister Glenda (Bill) Snow, sister-in-law Jannice Smith; mother-in-law Helen Haney, and many extended family members. He was predeceased by his parents Charles and Thelma Smith, and his brother Lyndley. Gary also leaves behind many wonderful friends in the curling and baseball communities. Gary was born in Birtle, MB and grew up on a farm near Beulah, MB. He was employed by Canada Packers for 28 years as a supervisor and later by the Sunrise School Division as a bus driver. We lived on an acreage near Lorette, MB where he enjoyed looking after his garden and birds. He participated in many sports including curling, baseball, duck hunting, and fishing. In curling, Gary was a true competitor, winning Seniors and Masters Canadian championships. One of his proudest curling accomplishments was being inducted into the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame in 2003 as a Curler/Builder. He served as President of the Manitoba Curling Association from 1999 to 2000 and became an Honorary Life member in 2001. He belonged to the Heather Curling Club for many years. He devoted many hours to the club, served as President and is an Honorary Life Member. Later in retirement, he played slowpitch softball for the Flashbacks. He also spent countless hours volunteering whether it was coaching youth baseball and hockey at Winakwa Community Centre or serving on various committees for curling. His true passion since he was a young boy was duck hunting, especially with his long-time friend Jack Walker and later with his best friend Ab Clearwater. Gary was a proud father and grandfather whose greatest joy was spending time with his family at our cottage at Westhawk Lake. He enjoyed many relaxing, early-morning hours fishing with his friend Marc. The family would like to thank Dr. Ponnampalam and CancerCare staff at St. Boniface Hospital; CancerCare staff at Health Sciences Centre; and Palliative Care staff at Riverview Health Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. There will be an informal gathering to celebrate Gary's life at the Heather Curling Club, 120 Youville Street on Sunday, January 17 between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. www.seasonsfunerals.ca

I remember Gary well from the 2014 Canadian Masters, Gary and his team won the GOLD that year with a undefeated record. We came in second in a thriller. Nice now to have those memories to recall! Gary went on to win Silver and Bronze medal standings at the Canadians. Quite a distinction to have achieved the trifecta status, that is. GOLD SILVER BRONZE at "the Canadians" not many curlers even get there! Rest well my friend, thanks for sharing some good times on and off the ice. - Posted by: Bob Edmondson, Mississauga Ontario (Fellow Masters Competitor, Canadian Masters Championships) on: Jan 14, 2016
