MAIRE TIMONEY October 29, 1924 - January 25, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear Aunt Maire on January 25, 2016 at St. Boniface Hospital. Left to cherish her memory are her nieces and nephews, Lesley Brown, Neil Brown (Kathy), Sheila Brown, Robert Still (Margie), Anne Day (Rodney), Maureen O'Connell, Patricia O'Connell, Tim O'Connell; brother-in-law Michael Still; many great-nieces; great-nephews; plus wonderful friends from Villa Cabrini and the White Ensign Club. Aunt Maire was born in Glasgow, Scotland and had recently celebrated 91 years of life. She was the first daughter born to Charles and Annie Timoney and was always the big sister to Anna Brown, Nora Still and Nuala O'Connell. She now joins her family in God's Life Everlasting. Aunt Maire had a long and adventurous life. She made the decision to move to Canada in the 1950's which lead to an exciting career with the Royal Canadian Navy achieving the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. She proudly accepted a posting in Egypt in 1975 as one of the first women to serve with the United Nations as a Canadian Peacekeeper, earning the Nobel Peace Prize Medal for her accomplishments. After 20 years in the forces, Aunt Maire celebrated her retirement in 1977 only to start her second career with the Federal Government as a civil servant, resulting in a second retirement in 1987 from the Department of Health and Welfare. Aunt Maire truly enjoyed her well-earned retirement. She travelled the world. She loved God, Country and her family. She will be missed. Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Rosary Church 510 River Ave, Winnipeg, MB at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 5, 2016. A private family interment will be held at a later date. We would like to thank all of the staff at St. Boniface Hospital who had cared for our Aunt Maire with compassion and dignity. Thank you Ken, we will never forget your loving care and presence at our Aunt's time and need. In lieu of flowers, please consider the charities that Aunt Maire supported. Donations may be made to St. Boniface General Hospital Research Foundation 409 Tache Ave, Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6 or Siloam Mission 300 Princess St. Winnipeg, MB R3B 1M3. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Maire and I never served together in the Wrens but crossed paths (or bows) at Sports Meets, Wren Reunions, and such. I remember her as a no-nonsense Scot who enjoyed life. I was not aware she had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. As we say in the Service, “Bravo zulu!” (Well done!) I think it is appropriate to quote the Naval Prayer for her: O Eternal Lord God, who alone rulest the raging of the sea; who has compassed the waters with bounds until day and night come to an end; be pleased to receive into Thy almighty and most gracious protection the persons of us Thy servants, and the Fleet in which we serve. Preserve us from the dangers of the sea, and from the violence of the enemy; that we may be a safeguard unto our most gracious Sovereign Lady, Queen Elizabeth, and her Dominions, and a security for such as pass upon the seas upon their lawful occasions; that the inhabitants of our Commonwealth may in peace and quietness serve Thee our God; and that we may return in safety to enjoy the blessings of the land, with the fruits of our labours, and with a thankful remembrance of Thy mercies to praise and glorify Thy Holy Name. Amen. My deepest sympathy to the family. - Posted by: Rosalee van Stelten (Lee Auger) (A sister in the Service (RCN Wrens)) on: Nov 03, 2016

  • I am saddened to learn just today of Maire's passing; had many a good laugh with her while serving with her in the Canadian Navy. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Dorothy Vallillee (friend) on: Nov 02, 2016

  • I am sorry to read about Maire's death. She was the office supervisor when I was a supervisor at the Health Protection Branch. She knew all about proper procedures for file management and associated records. She was strict about these procedures. At first it seemed a burden, but I can say that I learned so much from her and the importance of record-keeping. Indeed, our region became well-regarded for the quality of our office procedures and it began with Maire. She had a kind nature and a great sense of humour. May she rest in peace. I am sorry to not be in Winnipeg for her funeral. My condolences to her family. Donna-Mae Burgener - Posted by: Donna-Mae Burgener (colleague at Health Protection Branch) on: Feb 03, 2016
