Born: Apr 21, 1940
Date of Passing: Jan 26, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARLENE ANN STEEVES April 21, 1940 - January 26, 2016 It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Marlene Ann Steeves, aged 75, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, peacefully on January 26, 2016, with her loving family by her side. She passed away from complications of sudden illness at the Victoria General Hospital. Marlene was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on April 21, 1940, second child to Leslie and Elizabeth Kovacs. She is survived by her husband Claude Steeves and their three children, Wendy Rosner (Chuck) of Surrey, BC, Gord (Lorrie) of Winnipeg and Glen (Allison) of Bedford, NH. She is also survived by eight loving grandchildren, Sarah, Carissa, Abigail, Hayden, Camille, Matthew, Alexander and Benjamin, as well; her brothers, Joe Kovacs (Carol), Ken Kovacs (Christine); brothers-in-law, Murray (Daphne), Jake (Marilyn); sisters-in-law, Blanche, Glorhi (Bob), Cheryl, Noreen (Drew), as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister Sharon Kovacs. Marlene graduated from the St. Boniface School of Nursing in 1961, married Claude and spent her life devoted to her husband, children and work. Claude and Marlene celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in June 2014. This was a momentous occasion for Marlene, as she and Claude were surrounded by her closest friends and family. She was an active member in the community and her neighbourhood. She loved to golf, curl, play bridge, garden, socialize and travel. Marlene particularly looked forward to the trips to Mexico with her children and grandchildren. Marlene's nursing career spanned many decades as a community nurse in Transcona, then primarily as an RN at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she worked in many different capacities. Later in her career, and until her retirement in 2008, she worked primarily at the McEwan Center of Psychiatric Medicine. Marlene loved her work as a nurse and was well respected and loved by her colleagues and classmates. She stayed in contact with many fellow nurses she graduated with, and loved being a part of the reunions. The greatest treasures for Marlene were her grandchildren. Marlene spent much of her time with Claude visiting and watching their eight grandchildren at their activities in Winnipeg, British Columbia and New Hampshire. She was truly their biggest fan and was so very proud of each and every one of them. In keeping Marlene's wishes, cremation has taken place and a funeral mass celebrating her life will be held on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in Christ the King Roman Catholic Church, 847 St. Mary's Road. In lieu flowers, if friends so desire, donations in Marlene's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU & CO. My condolences to Claude and the family. I had the pleasure to work with Marlene at St. B. Her calm and gentle presence was always reassuring for patients and staff alike. Often Marlene would start off a story with a smirk on her face and a little laugh and say "You know, I have to tell you..." and she would share something personal or work-related that always fit the moment; she taught me so much without knowing it. - Posted by: Isabelle (Coworker-M2 & M3) on: Jan 28, 2016

My hero. Three words define my dearest Mar. Caring, happiness and joy. Mar probably never heard of a world famous care giver in France who spends his life working to improve the lives of those less fortunate than him. His advice is to find out what your God given talents are, develop them to the best of your ability AND become the best human being you can be. Too soon gone but take comfort in knowing that Mar had a happy and joyous life. Her family is prouder of her than you can ever imagine. - Posted by: Ken Kovacs (Brother) on: Jan 28, 2016

Growing up on the same street as Marlene lived I would often answer the door to her canvassing for a cause or helping her son Gord with his campaigning. Every time I would run into Marlene she always had a genuine concern as to what was going on in my life and you could see that she really cared. I often would be out running and bump into her walking through St. Vital Park. Always a hug, big smile and a "how are the kids?" The world could use a lot more Marlenes in it. Deepest condolences to you Claude and Gord, Wendy and Glen and families as you mourn the loss of a Wife, Mother and Grandmother. - Posted by: Kathryn Milburn (Sawatzky) (Friend) on: Jan 27, 2016
