AUGUSTINUS (GUS) LODEWYKS April 25, 1954 - February 2, 2016 Our hearts are broken. On Tuesday, February 2, 2016 we lost the man we loved and respected. Augustinus (Gus) Franciscus Maria Lodewyks joined his heavenly family: parents Catharina and Joseph, sister-in-law Colette, and in-laws Pierre and Rita, Dave, Derry and Derrol. Gus is survived by his wife of 39 years Marilyn, son Joel and wife Carly, and daughter Kara. Left to mourn are his brothers Peter (Gisele), Hank (Betty), Frank (Wendy), Bill, Hans (Doris), Mike (Sue), Uncle Tony and many loving nieces and nephews. Gus grew up in Elmwood and then moved to St. Norbert at age 10. He graduated from St. Norbert Collegiate and then finished his Phys. Ed degree and Bachelor of Education at the University of Manitoba. He taught for two years before attending Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. As a chiropractor he had truly found his calling, healing and caring for his many patients. He was generous, compassionate and sincere. He had a unique ability to change someone's life completely. He retired after 25 years of service so he could travel and care for Marilyn. While travelling North America, Europe and the Panama Canal, he loved the places he saw and the people he met. His favourite destinations were Israel where he walked in the footsteps of his Lord, and the Netherlands where he reconnected with his cousins and the places his parents had spoken about. He truly felt a part of his heart belonged there. Gus was so very proud of his children, supporting and encouraging them in all their activities and choices. He instilled in them his love of the Lord and the power of prayer. He was also proud of his self-published memoir "When All Goes Quiet" that came out in July just before his diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer. With courage, determination and great faith, he faced his diagnosis and realized his cup was full, having lived a good life and made a difference in the world. The sheer amount of kindness and love given to Gus and his family cannot be put into words. Whether it was visits from family or friends, we never felt alone. We extend our utmost appreciation to all of you who were there for him and helped with his endless projects. A special thank you to Dr. Kevin Coates, the WRHA Palliative Care team as well as the staff on 3E at Riverview Health Centre. Prayers will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Monday, February 8, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. The Memorial Mass will be Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Mary Mother of the Church, 85 Kirkbridge Drive. Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Siloam Mission, 300 Princess Street, Winnipeg, R3B 1M3, or Riverview Health Centre, 1 Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, R3L 2P4, in Gus' name. • Gus was my chiropractor and my friend, as a patient of the Corydon Chiropractic Centre and through treatments I received by him in his home after he retired, and I would not hesitate, for a second, to call him the single most important health care professional that I have encountered in my life, so far. My thoughts go out to Marilyn, Joel and Kara at this difficult (and unfair) time. - Posted by: John Sutherland (Friend) on: Feb 09, 2016

  • When I crawled painfully into Gus's office in the mid-90s I thought my life would never be the same! But as he promised, by the 10th day I was well enough to join my family for the rest of our vacation, and at one month, well enough to return to work! I'll always be grateful for the care he gave me during that crisis, and for the maintenance treatments up to his retirement. - Posted by: Murray Bryson (Patient ) on: Feb 09, 2016

  • We are sad to learn of the passing of our good friend, Gus. We had the good fortune to meet Gus and his lovely, wife, Marilyn, during the Viking tour of the Netherlands in April 2009. We became instant friends and though thousands of miles separated us, our friendship was kept alive by the a robust e-mail correspondence. We loved the way that Gus affectionately signed off each and every e-mail to us. "Love, Gus.....and Marilyn too." We also had the very good fortune to have enjoyed their company on three occasions when they came to our neck of the woods in New York. One of those special get togethers was their visiting our home along with their lovely daughter, Kara, when we hosted them to a good old fashioned American barbecue. Also, we spent a very long weekend with them in Boston when we were exposed non-stop to Gus' hilarious sense of humor. One evening we enjoyed a Boston Symphony Orchestra concert. When the concert was over, we were looking without success for a cab to take us back to the hotel. It was mid- October and darn chilly especially for my wife who is cold intolerant. Without wasting any time, Gus peeled off his sweater and draped it over my wife's neck, showing how much of a gentleman and caring person he was. That same night, he and Marilyn honored our wedding anniversary, which would be celebrated later that month, by generously treating us to dinner. When we learned of Gus' serious illness three months ago and the publication of his book, "When All Goes Quiet," we called Gus and Marily to express our feelings. It was understandably a very emotional phone call but we managed to tell him how much we looked forward to receivingg a copy of his book, inquired how we could do this and told him and Marilyn how much we loved them. A week later, we received a signed copy from Gus. We had always known that Gus was a man of deep faith but we had not idea about the visions and revelations he had experienced since a child and which he captured so movingly in his book. We will forever treasure the memory of Gus who was in every sense of the word a remarkably loving, kind, supportive and courageous human being. Though we knew each other only nearly six years, we feel blessed to have known and loved him...his spirit made an indelible impression in our hearts and in our souls. The dedication he wrote to us in the copy of "When All Goes Quiet" that he sent us is quintessential Gus in gracing us with his own blessing. He wrote in part: "May the Lord continue to take you to places you have never been before and keep you in the Palm of His Hands! Also know that you have book in you!" Dearest Gus, you are so right. We certainly do have a book in us and you are a key and defining chapter in it because your love and kindness immeasurably enriched our lives. Thank you for inspiring us! Dearest Marilyn, our deepest condolences to you and your family. You will always be in our thoughts and prayers. • Dear Marilyn, Family and Friends, please accept my sincere sympathy. Be assured that Gus, Marilyn, children and you all will be present in my prayers and my daily Eucharist. God had already assured Gus of his Presence in his life. May God now welcome him in his Kingdom for Eternity. Fr. Eugene. - Posted by: Fr. Eugene Raimbault (Friend) on: Feb 07, 2016

  • Dear Marilyn, Joel, Carly and Kara, We are so sorry to hear about Gus' (Dad's) passing. We lived across the street from you for over 25 years and became such close friends. Even our cottages were close by. We have many memories of our lake adventures. Our children Tanis, Derik, Joel and Kara enjoyed tubing, skiing, picnics, boat trips to explore the lake. Marilyn, myself and other neighbours enjoyed our long walks for many years. Gus was also our chiropractor and he was always a positive support for our son Derik. We know he is in a better place. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family at this most difficult time. Barb, Ryan, Tanis and Derik Brako - Posted by: Barb and Ryan Brako (Friend) on: Feb 07, 2016
