DAVID JOHN PATTEN December 17, 1945 - February 10, 2016 Dave loved life. Family came first. He loved bragging about each of his children and grandchildren. From cheering at hockey games to sitting quietly through dance recitals, he was so proud of every accomplishment. His second love was tennis. He started playing at a young age, and continued until he was too sick to play anymore. In between he was very proud of his years as a tennis official with Tennis Canada. Dave spent 30 years working for MPI, starting as claims adjuster and ending his career, as he called it the "conscience of the corporation". As a customer service rep, he loved fixing problems, and had a real feeling of satisfaction when a distraught customer walked away satisfied and smiling. After taking early retirement Dave found a new love, travelling. He loved telling people that he had been around the world, and he almost made it. Dave faced his toughest challenge this last year, his fight with cancer. He faced everyday with determination to beat this cruel disease. He never gave up. Husband, father, grandfather will be missed and always loved. Predeceased by his father John "Jack" Patten, he is survived by his loving wife Dianne; sons, Sean, Mark (Amanda) and their daughter Tia; daughters, Dawn and her sons, Ethan and Jason, Megan (Greg) and their daughter Lily; his mother Marie Patten; his brother John; sister Elizabeth (Nelson) and many nieces, nephews and friends. A Celebration of David's life will be held on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. from Mosaic Funeral Chapel, 1839 Inkster Blvd. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to CancerCare Manitoba. Cremation has taken place and interment will be held at a later date. • Dianne, I was so sorry to see that Dave passed away. I remember first meeting him with you way back in the "good old days" and over the years I can't remember him ever having not having a big smile, and his great sense of humour whenever I ran into him. I know that you and he enjoyed many wonderful times travelling the globe together. I pray that the memories you have of these journeys and of the wonderful times you shared together with your family will help ease the pain of your loss as time goes by. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your children and grandchildren at this sad and difficult time. - Posted by: Janice Hanson Tennant (friend) on: Feb 20, 2016

  • It was October of 1978. I was a brand-new Adjuster Trainee, seated beside a veteran Adjuster II named Dave Patten at the old King Street Claim Centre. I could write a book about the adventures we had there! As the years passed, our career paths diverged, but Dave remained his usual ebullient self. He retired from MPI a few years before I did, and when our paths crossed, instead of work, we talked about his world travels, which were extensive. Dave, you left us way too soon, and you will be missed, by all those who were fortunate enough to have known you. - Posted by: Larry Roberts (MPI Colleague and Friend) on: Feb 19, 2016

  • Dave was a positive presence at MPI and all-around good guy. He always had a smile on his face and took the time to develop meaningful relationships with co-workers and customers alike. He was a bit of a computer hobbyist and we enjoyed shooting the breeze in the early days of personal computing. Condolences to the family; he will be missed. - Posted by: Mark Wolch (MPI colleague) on: Feb 17, 2016

  • My sincere condolences to Dianne and her family. I knew Dave for the time he was with MPI, and always considered him a good man and good to deal with. He was smart and a common sense kind of guy. He left far too early. - Posted by: Chic Seabrook (work associate) on: Feb 16, 2016

  • The first line in Dave's tribute certainly nailed it - he did love life. It was a pleasure to work with him at numerous tennis tournaments, including the 1999 Pan Am Games, and I always enjoyed bumping into him at Eaton Place for an impromptu chat. He was always smiling and happy and although I hadn't seen him for a few years I will miss him. RIP mate. - Posted by: Doug Stone (Friend) on: Feb 16, 2016

  • My deepest condolences to Dave's family. He left this earth much too early. Dave was one of a kind: full of energy and zest. He was also our MPI historian. Ask him a question and he'd likely know the answer in a second. And if he didn't, he would do his best to find it. He's now joining his MPI sidekick, Dave Petz (another great guy). I can only imagine what they're up to....the problems they're going to solve. Both gone much too soon! - Posted by: Brian Smiley (MPI co-worker) on: Feb 16, 2016
