I had the privilege of being taught biology at Kelvin High School in the 1970s by the wonderful Mrs. Glassco. Mrs. Glassco was an erudite, respected and wonderful teacher who has remained in my memory as my favorite teacher. I am saddened to learn recently of her passing. She was an inspiration to us all. The fact that she earned her MSc from McGill at a time when this was not common, combined with her strict but gentle demeanour, made her an awe inspiring figure in my eyes. She took a special interest in me and my interest in zoology and helped me excel in her classroom through independent work undertaken after class. One of her wishes for her retirement was to have a greenhouse. I do hope that she was able to do so. She was a nurturing presence who brought out the best in us. Before I graduated, she said that she would be interested in knowing what I was up to 10 years later. While I did study biology at university, I had to leave it behind when I ventured into another field, French literature. I became a professor and was happy that one day I actually bumped in to her at my university and was able to tell how much inspiration I drew from having been her student and how grateful I was for her passion for biology and zoology. I still think about her once in a while, now 45 years after having been her student. My favorite teacher. - Posted by: Kenneth M. (Kelvin student, 1972-74) on: Jul 23, 2019

I have only just discovered today that Mrs. Glassco has passed away. Of all the teachers I had in my life, she was the one who had the most influence on my future. She was the first person to pull my attention away from the Arts and make me feel that a career in science was possible. After my undergrad degree, I returned to Kelvin to visit her and she encouraged me to apply to Medicine. I laughed, but then I did it. Now I am very happy in my medical career and I am forever grateful to her. I can still hear her voice, "You cannot do something if you don't try!". I loved her. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Lori R. (Student) on: Jan 28, 2019

I am deeply saddened by Alison's passing.I became friends with Andrew at age 14 & I remember feeling so welcomed whenever I came over to 20 Monaco Bay. I remember BBQ'S, basement ping pong tournaments & what I recall most fondly was Alison's joyful booming laugh. I am saddened to see in the obituaries that my great teacher has passed on. Mrs. Glassco had a nick name for me and stays in my heart and that was Big Joe. A wonderful lady and teacher who I never forget when I drive by Kelvin High School. God Bless. - Posted by: Joe Anania (Student 1974-76) on: Feb 21, 2016

Dear Glassco Family, As a student of your mom’s in the early 80’s at Kelvin High School, your mom made not only a difference in my academic life, but in my personal life as well. I remember so fondly hearing her voice in a Jamaican drawl scolding me for not using my brain to its full potential. When a less than stellar teacher (during her tenure at Kelvin) pushed me to the edge of darkness, it was your mom who brought me back to prove this individual wrong and go on to become the class valedictorian. For this I will be forever grateful to her. May the memories of your mom live on in your hearts and minds in the coming days and years ahead knowing she made a difference in so many people’s lives. My condolences to Andrew and Megan. What can I say about your mother and my friend and mentor for over 30 years. She was articulate, funny, wise and a very intelligent woman. We enjoyed laughing together, discussing different teaching methods and what was going on in the world, according to us. She was a great teacher and was loved by her students. Adios Alison.
