DONATINA GAROFALO January 1, 1930 - March 6, 2016 It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, nonna and bisnonna, Donatina Garofalo on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at the age of 86. Donatina was predeceased by her husband Michelino, grandson Paul Garofalo, sister Carmela Valles, and parents Donato and Anna Circelli. Remaining to cherish Donatina's memory are sons Antonio and wife Lora; Angelo and wife Roslyn; grandchildren Michael, Daniel (Sarah), Christopher (Jaclyn), Michael, Jillian and Adam and great-granddaughter, Isabella. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Immacolata Garofalo, nephew Antonio Garofalo and wife Julie, and niece Josie Zimarino and husband Pino and families, brother-in-law Matteo as well as her brothers Baldasarre, and Silvestro, sisters Isabella, and Incoronata, and numerous nieces and nephews in Italy, France, Switzerland and Venezuela. Donatina was born on January 1, 1930 in San Bartolomeo in Galdo, Benevento, Italy. In 1952 Michelino and Donatina were married and soon Antonio was born. While Michelino worked in Venezuela, Donatina kept the home fires burning working on the family farm and raising Antonio. Shortly after Michelino returned from Venezuela Angelo was born. In 1968 Donatina and Michelino immigrated to Canada to start their new lives. Donatina worked in the sewing factories of Perfect Fit Glove and Freed and Freed, often bringing home piecework for extra income. When Dad purchased the Charleswood Pastry Shop, Donatina worked alongside Michelino managing the front counter, decorating cookies and helping with pizzas at the back of the shop. Despite her difficulty with the English language, Donatina served her customers well, with many becoming her regulars' and friends. Our Mom and Nonna was a fabulous cook. We would look forward to family meals filled with homemade cavatelli, cannelloni filled with creamy meat sauce, lasagnas, homemade meatballs and sausage in delicious homemade sauce followed by grilled meats, salads and fruit. Nonna's grandchildren always looked forward to her chicken soup and cinnamon buns. Donatina was a hard-working, tireless lady who crocheted numerous tablecloths, doilies and afghans after a full day's work. All the grandchildren are blessed to have received heirloom tablecloths. Nonna only stopped making her creations when her eyesight failed. Nonna canned her own tomatoes making sauce for the whole winter. Nonna's homemade sausage preserved in oil was hard to duplicate though we often tried and failed. Mom often said that whenever she felt unwell she would make a batch of homemade bread or cavatelli to distract her from her daily health challenges. We would often find Nonna kneading dough using her walker to hold the bowl so that she could work at a comfortable level. Nonna was a strong, shrewd, uncompromising lady with a soft heart for her family. We love her and will miss her dearly. Our family would like to extend thanks to the friends and neighbours who supported our parents in their declining years with dignity and compassion. We extend our appreciation to the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service and Mom's home care support workers. If so desired donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice.
