Date of Passing: Mar 07, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN ALBERT GILBERT It is with deep sadness the family announces the passing of Jack Gilbert on March 7, 2016 at the Victoria General Hospital. Jack was predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Betty on September 14, 2013. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his three children, Rick Gilbert (Joanne), Margot Bowes (Len) and Cathy Therrien (Paul), grandchildren, Bryon (Chelsey), Kendra, Melissa (Billy) and Kevin; great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Maddox; and sister-in-law Lynn Hovey (Dick). Jack was born in Toronto on January 7, 1924, the only child of Albert and Marjorie Gilbert. They moved several times during his childhood making homes in Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Calgary. Jack was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. After the war, he attended the University of British Columbia where he attained his Bachelor of Commerce Degree. He finally moved back to Winnipeg and lived on Stradbrook Street where he met Betty, "the girl next door," and the love of his life. They married in 1950 and raised three children in River Heights. In later years, Jack and Betty enjoyed their home on the Assiniboine River in St. James and then finally moved to Sterling House where they made many wonderful friends. After graduating from university, Jack started a successful, quality, greeting card company called, Gilbert Greeting Cards. He took pride in writing all the heartfelt, inspirational, and sometimes comical messages found within. His cards were carried in Hudson's Bay and Birks stores across Canada. When it became increasingly difficult to compete with companies like Coutts and Hallmark, Jack began a very successful career as a manufacturer's agent for ladies clothing which he enjoyed until he retired in 1989. Music was one of Jack's passions. He was a gifted pianist and enjoyed composing and playing popular and classical pieces, always filling our home with music. Even when macular degeneration took most of his sight, he continued to play by ear. Jack was a passionate photographer, capturing many special family moments and beautiful scenes in nature. He spent many hours in his darkroom bringing his images to life. Woodworking was another hobby Jack enjoyed. He loved making little animals and creatures that now decorate all our homes and gardens. Jack loved the outdoors and was happiest when he was spending time with his family at Victoria Beach, camping at Blue Lake or fishing at Paradise Campground in Minnesota. A celebration of Jack's life will take place on Wednesday, March 16 at 10:00 a.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of your choice. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

I was unable to attend the service, but recently mentioned his passing to my own father, and we recalled when we went over to the Gilbert home for a music evening with Mr. Gilbert on the Hammond or piano, Richard on guitar, and others contributing on various other instruments /singing to a rich evening of music and companionship. I recall Mr. Gilbert as always being very warm, outgoing and supportive and a genuinely nice individual. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Colin Morrison (Friend of son Richard) on: Apr 07, 2016

Our family has such wonderful memories of times with Jack and Betty. Our children affectionately referred to Jack as granddad. Especially memorable were our many Christmas Eves spent with Jack and Betty with the kids surrounding Jack singing carols as he accompanied them on his piano. We fondly remember our fireside chats at Blue Lake with Jack's and Betty and Jack's stories of his childhood, especially his times at the lake. Our family will miss you Jack but will cherish our memories. Love the Harrington family - Posted by: Harrington family () on: Mar 15, 2016

We have had so many great times and laughs over the years when, he and Betty came to Thunder Bay. Always with a joke a laugh or a smile, his personality was infecting, always made you happy. He took many fabulous pictures of the family and scenery around the lake. One in particular is of Paradise Island is a series of frames which he made into a panoramic photo. On his regular business trips, he would bring us up to date on what the family was doing and then we have him play on the organ with a sing along. We talked in Dec when he called us and he "as always " the same old Jack, never a complaint. To the family please know that our thoughts are with you at this sad time , but know he is at peace and with Betty playing all their favourite songs. - Posted by: Jane and David Glover (Long time family friends) on: Mar 13, 2016

So sorry to learn of Jack's passing. I knew Jack through business and always had a great deal of respect for him. He was one of the "Gentlemen" in our industry and was always highly regarded by both customers and his peers. My condolences to the entire family. - Posted by: Patrick LaMonica (Friend) on: Mar 13, 2016
