SYLVIA BEAUCAGE- PENA 1948 - 2016 N'oublie jamais que je t'aime avec tout mon coeur. On Wednesday, March 16 2016, our beautiful Sylvia gently passed away at home surrounded by love after a valiant fight with cancer. She was a true warrior woman and lived her life and death to the fullest. Her ancestors including father Roland and brother Danny welcome her with open arms. She leaves behind a big hole in the hearts of Don, her dearest loving husband of 36 years, as well as three beloved children Nigel (Jadie), Makaela (Dane), Nina (Bernard) and grandsons Noah, Jasiah and Joshua, whom she loved with a passion. She will also be dearly missed by her mother Rose Menard, sisters (Marjorie, Louanne, Verlie, Mardelle, Bernadette, Angie) and brothers (Eddie, Lucien, Leonard, Marcy and Jeffrey), paternal auntie (Lillian Meush) and maternal aunties (Anna Thorvaldson, Alice Williams, Irene Fisk), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and her large Circle of amazing friends. Family meant everything to her. Sylvia was born on November 5, 1948 in Vassar, Manitoba. She was proud of her roots and fondly remembered her days with Mémère Beaucage, picking berries and being her helper. Her life work as a teacher touched countless children's lives in various Manitoba communities from her first post in Thicket Portage to her last position as counsellor at St. Mary's Academy. Sylvia was a first class volunteer. She was always ready to lend a hand and help out at various events, no matter what. She especially loved selling raffle tickets at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, dancing her way through the crowds. Sylvia was also an avid sports fan and vocal cheerleader both for her favorite teams and for her kids. Sylvia was a natural born organizer. She always had a special way of gathering people together - to celebrate, to travel, to work together - you name it, she made it happen. Life was and adventure and she was the life of the party, dancing away and brightening any room with her laughter. Her love of travel took her to Europe, Abu Dhabi, Hawaii, Trinidad (where she was married), Barbados and many other Caribbean islands. We thank her and will always remember her gifts of everlasting love, wisdom, support, generosity of spirit, friendship, devotion, faithfulness and joie de vivre. Dance on Sylvia! In keeping with Sylvia's wishes, cremation has taken place and a funeral mass celebrating her life will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Emile Roman Catholic Church, 556 St. Anne's Road. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, gifts in memory of Sylvia may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU & CO. Our hearts are sadden with your passing away Auntie Sylvia. We wished we got the chance to spend many years with you. However, our ways are not the ways of God so we take comfort in knowing that our God loves you and He will keep you in His abode. We have your picture dancing happily at Nina & Bernard's wedding last year and we'll keep that memory with us. It's our prayer that God in His own miraculous way, will comfort, strengthen and sustain all of you and your extended family. We leave you with this verse from Job 16:5 "But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief" On behalf of our family and the entire Ghanaian Community in Winnipeg, please accept our condolences. - Posted by: Maggie & Sam Yeboah (Auntie & Uncle of Bernard Kankam, Nina's husband ) on: Mar 22, 2016

I met the lovely Mrs Beaucage-Pena when I was a high school student at St Mary's Academy. I lost my mother to cancer when I was 13 years old and felt alone. Together we started a bereavement program for students. It was a place where we could gather and talk about life and loss. She validated my ideas and most importantly...she listened to me as if I was contributor...not just a kid. That interaction meant a lot...unfortunately I never told her. In my graduating year, I was overwhelmed as I was expected to pay for my own post secondary education. I needed to apply for scholarships but didnt know where to start. She guided me through the process and I was lucky enough to receive a few on my own. But then one day, I received a "surprise letter" from the University of Winnipeg. I was the winner of a Leadership Award...but I never applied for it. Unbeknownst to me, Mrs Beaucage-Pena had nominated me. The money was enough to pay for my first year of tuition. It was the best gift I've received to date. Thank you for all of your support and love. It's been 16 years since I've graduated but I'll never forget you and your positive spirit. ❤️ - Posted by: Meera Bahadoosingh (Former student) on: Mar 21, 2016

Condolences to the Pena family and especially to Don, our friend for over 50 years. Words are inadequate at this time to truly express the sorrow that we share with you. We thank God for Sylvia's life and the many memories and laughs that we shared together. We thank God for the happiness that she brought to all. May her soul rest in peace- Amen. We pray also for you Don and your family that you will find the strength and comfort to go on, knowing that Sylvia will now be looking after you in heaven. - Posted by: Victor & Margaret Stanley (Good friends) on: Mar 21, 2016

- Posted by: Marc Beaudry (friend) on: Mar 20, 2016

As was mentioned in Sylvia's obituary, she loved selling raffle tickets at Folk Fest. I have worked with Sylvia for many years at Folk Fest and she did truly love being with people and connecting. She was dedicated to her volunteer role and shared her expertise with others. She will be missing by so many. I cannot imagine how much your family will miss her. Please accept my condolences on behalf of the Raffle Crew and the Winnipeg Folk Festival. - Posted by: Laurie Sodomlak (Volunteer coordinator for Raffle at Folk Fest) on: Mar 20, 2016

The First Time: Norma and I went to Winnipeg in the early 90's. We walked down the stairs to exit the terminal building. There was Sylvia, a a smile on her face, happiness in her voice, "Uncle Leric! Aunty Norma! I'm Sylvia, Don's wife". The first time, just like that. She greeted us as she would greet old friends; who would have known it was the first time we were meeting? She was like that. Many, many, many times after, always "Uncle Lerice, Aunty Norma". Beautiful smile, wonderful disposition, always radiating happiness. The Last Time: 2014 in Barbados. At the airport. "Goodbye Uncle Leric, Aunty Norma. Will see you soon again." Looking so healthy, strong, and as always, a beautiful smile. We didn't know the future, did we? Gone too soon to Heaven. We cry and mourn your loss dearest Sylvia. Uncle Leric, Aunty Norma and all of the Bajan Hunte/ Marquez/McCarthy family. Goodbye. Goodbye. Goodbye. - Posted by: Leric Hunte (Don's Uncle) on: Mar 20, 2016

I cannot thank Michael enough for introducing me (and subsequently our two girls) to Don and Sylvie and their wonderful children and family. Sylvie and Don have always been so welcoming to our family. Michael and Don and Sylvie go way back to the time when Don first met Sylvie, when they lived in Thompson and Nigel was born, and on and on. There are so many memories which are always filled with Sylvie's infectious laugh, always being welcome in their home, the great food, especially pelau (that Don also helped cook), Sylvie rocking on that special rocking chair that she loved, swaying and talking about life. As she rocked, she listened, heard, and understood. Sylvie always met life head-on, accepting all and everything about a person, loving them for exactly who they are. True to her assumed Trinidadian culture, Sylvie taught Sasha how to "dolla' whine," which Sasha has now passed onto Layla. The many parties at their home in Lorette and then in Winnipeg: all were filled with a bright light that Sylvie gave to that time and beyond. Our love to Don and their three lovely children and grandchildren, all of whom are different in their own way and yet so much like their Mom in so many other ways. Love to Sylvie's Mom and her siblings, who are wonderful, loving people. The memories go on, which become treasures for us all. Love you, Sylvie...you'll always be in our hearts. Always... - Posted by: Alex, Sasha, and Layla Lawrence-Persad (Friends) on: Mar 19, 2016

Our condolences go out to Don and family over the loss of this amazing woman. For us, Sylvia will always be remembered for the wonderful times we spent with her over meals and activities in Lorette. We are proud to have called her a friend. Many an evening partying where Sylvia seldom left the dance floor. She was always the life of the party and her vivacious spirit always brought joy to those she was with. It was very difficult not to have a smile on your face when you were in her presence. Her devotion to her family could not be surpassed. Her suffering now over, we fully expect her to be organizing a party in heaven where everyone will be on their feet swaying to the music. She will certainly be missed. - Posted by: Susan and Brien Kulbaba (friends) on: Mar 19, 2016

Don, Nigel, Makaela and Nina, the light of your life may be gone but her spirit will shine through you all as you journey through your lives. She did have that "joie de vivre" that would radiate to everyone wherever she went especially when she was with all her large family in Elie. We send our sympathy and warm hugs to Rose and all her brothers and sisters. We are with you all in spirit at this time as you say goodbye to the love of your lives! Take care, Gerry and Val - Posted by: Gerry & Val Carignan (Family friends) on: Mar 19, 2016

Sylvia had a smile that would brighten any room - and that smile has been passed down to her children who look at life with wider eyes because of her! I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, Don, Nigel, Makaela & Nina (and family)...and know that the memories you hold dear to your hearts will sustain you over the next few difficult months. The wonderful pictures posted show a woman whose shoes will be hard to fill, but one who left a wonderful legacy for you in the days moving forward. My very best wishes to you all. xoxo - Posted by: Giselle Schween (Friend) on: Mar 19, 2016
