ISSIE BRASS It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Issie Brass in the presence of his loving family on March 24, 2016 in his 100th year. For Issie, his family always came first. He is survived by Freda, his loving wife for nearly 66 beautiful years. To Hannah and Alan (Marion Silver), he was the best father. He enjoyed a wonderful relationship with his adoring grandchildren, Lawrence, Rafi, and Shira. He is survived by sisters, Esther Gotfried (the late Bernie) and Norma Berlin (Don). Issie was predeceased by brothers Morris and Abe (the late Rose). We thank our dear friend, Augie Braz, who became family, for all his support. Born in Poland, Issie sailed to Canada with his brothers in 1928. Issie grew up in North End of Winnipeg in the height of the Great Depression and served overseas with the Canadian Army during the Second World War. Issie and his beloved wife, Freda were the proprietors of Brass' Grocery. Known for his scrupulous honesty, Issie treated all with respect and gave back to the community. His integrity, ethic and infectious smile continued in his work with Big Four and United Army and Navy Surplus. Issie was admired as a true "mensch" and will be greatly missed. We thank the Maples Personal Care Home and his homecare workers for their tremendous assistance. The funeral was held on March 27, 2016. Donations in Issie's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

One of nature's true gentlemen. Exceptionally: wise, kind, generous, and friendly (he had a smile for everyone), he was honest as the day is long, and a monumentally hard-working man of the people. It was a privilege to have known him. - Posted by: Judge Sidney Lerner (Friend) on: Aug 09, 2017

People remember my Uncle Issie in so many ways for so many reasons. I remember him from my days visiting from Toronto as a young boy. To stay with the Uncle Issie when he owned the grocery store and lived in the back was equivalent to staying in a ten star hotel. My Uncle Issie and Aunt Freda had a home that was so warm and loving it still warms my heart. Uncle Issie would take me by the hand into the store where I was invited to have all the "goodies" I liked, I loved the ice cream bars. I was visiting when my cousin Allan had a push button phone installed for his parents, Uncle Issie's reaction was equivalent to winning the Supper Lottery. Looking back I think it was just an excuse to entertain his nephew the same as when he would drive us in the magnificent 30 year old Brass mobile with giant fins. Uncle Issie was a remarkable man would gave his world so much kindness and he left me with marvelous memories of how a simple world can be so wonderful. - Posted by: FRED BRASS (Nephew) on: Apr 04, 2016

A man I admired and loved very much. Issie had an warm and infectious personality. We retell the story of the time my wife, Robbi, in Winnipeg on business, visited the Brasses. Issie accompanied Robbi to the bus stop trying hard to keep the mosquitoes off Robbi. He was incredibly caring and giving. Dale Burkart, Toronto - Posted by: Dale Burkart (Friend) on: Apr 03, 2016

Mr. Brass and and his wife Freda helped so many people in the NE with their little corner store:Brass's Grocery. They extended credit to all no matter your circumstances because as I remember Mr. Brass saying "They gotta eat". Such a giving family especially in the Storm of 67 when older people couldn't get to the store, Mr. Brass called my Dad and said "we need to deliver groceries to the elderly and I need help". Thank-you Mr. Brass and Family for all your life's love to our community. - Posted by: Stephen Sumka (North End Neighbour) on: Apr 02, 2016

My deepest sympathy to all the Brass Family on the loss of your beloved husband, father and grandfather, and brother. Issie indeed was a "Mensh", and an inspiration to all who knew him.
