Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDANEEN DAWN COOK August 9, 1966 May 23, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Daneen Dawn Cook of Grand Rapids, Manitoba. She leaves to mourn her daughters, Ashten and Kelsey; mother, Irene Johnson; brothers, Dwayne Cook (Melina) and Matthew Hamill; sister, Angela Hamill; niece, Cassidy Ferland; nephews, Corey and Cameron Ferland. She also leaves to mourn many aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends, too many to mention. Daneen was predeceased by her father, Daniel Bruce Cook; grandparents, Dan and Angelique Cook. Daneen was born in Ashern, Manitoba and raised in Grand Rapids for the first few years of her life and eventually moved to Brandon and Winnipeg when her parents left to pursue their education. She attended the University of Manitoba to receive her teaching degree. Once she graduated she worked in many First Nation communities across Canada, the latest being in Chemawawin Cree Nation, Manitoba, Fort Severn, Ontario and finally Fond du Lac, Saskatchewan. Jobs that others in her field might shy away from she always rose to the challenge with her own unique brand of aboriginal tradition based teaching and grace. Daneen had a gift, a great ability to connect with her students, "her kids" as she called them. She was always willing to spend extra time after school to be their friend and mentor and spoil them when she could, just to see the smiles on their faces. She was a kind person who enjoyed visiting with family and her many friends. They will remember the fun times they had together and when she was with them when they needed her. She will be missed by all who knew her. Wake services will be held May 29 to May 30, 2016, St. Alexander Catholic Hall in Grand Rapids, Manitoba. A funeral service will be held at the St. Alexander Catholic Hall at 11:00 a.m. May 31, 2016 with Father Noel Boulanger officiating. The funeral service will be followed by a feast and all are invited to attend. Following the service, Daneen will be taken to Winnipeg for cremation. Her ashes will be buried on her birthday, August 9, 2016, laid to her final resting place next to her father in the Roman Catholic graveyard in Grand Rapids, Manitoba. Arrangements Entrusted To ANDERSON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME Ashern, Manitoba 1-866-293-4951

Daneen was my Native Awareness teacher in high school, and I honestly don't think I would have survived if it weren't for her. She was one of the only people who understood me, who made me feel worthwhile. I still can't believe she's gone. She was a great, strong, warm, funny, inspiring woman who changed my life forever, and was more of a mom to me than my mother ever was. I will miss her always. May her family and friends be comforted, and may she rest in peace. - Posted by: Megan (Student) on: Aug 02, 2017
