Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN KURYK February 9, 1925 - June 2, 2016 It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we say goodbye to our beloved husband, dad, gigi, and great-gigi, John. With his family at his bedside on June 2, 2016, at the Fisher Personal Care Home, our dad took his last breath. He was 91 years old. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Lovey (nee Malkowich); twin daughters, Linda (Eddie) Trachuk of Fisher Branch, and Iris (Ron) Carlisle of Winnipeg; his grandchildren, Dawn (Joe) Cote of The Pas, MB, Heather (Russell) Moore of Regina, SK, and his great-grandchildren, Rylan and Abigail Cote, and Aiden Moore. John will also be missed by his brother, Paul; sisters-in-law Nellie Kuryk, Olga Malkowich, Shirley Malkowich, Augustine and Eddie Konopetcki, Steven and Joanne Malkowich, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents George and Mary, twin brothers, Steve, Bill, and sister Lena Chopey. Dad was born on February 9, 1925 on the homestead farm in Fisher Branch. He was the youngest of his family. Dad attended Fisher Branch School completing Grade 11. Dad served in the army, stationed across Canada from the west coast to the east coast. In 1948, Dad returned to his hometown of Fisher Branch and was employed by the old Co-op store for two years. This is where he found the love of his life, Lovey Malkowich. They were married on October 29, 1949. Mom will forever treasure the 66 years of many wonderful memories they shared with each other. Dad had worked as a grain buyer for Federal Grain and Manitoba Pool for 38 years until his retirement in 1988. He always said, "he was busier now that he retired and never knew how he ever had time to work". In Dad's lifetime, he was an active member of his community. He was a life member and treasurer for Knights of Columbus, member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ukrainian National Home, and enjoyed playing bingo, calling bingo numbers or selling Nevada tickets at the Fisher Branch Community Centre. Dad loved his sports of hockey (Toronto Maple Leafs), curling, which he did a lot of in the winter months and best of all, baseball. He played with the Fisher Branch Falcons Baseball Team from 1954 to 1959. Dad was named "The Rabbit", as he was the fastest runner on the team. This team was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in Morden on June 22, 2007. To this date, Dad's baseball uniform remains in the Museum of Morden for everyone to see. From early years till the end of Dad's life, the Toronto Blue Jays was his favourite team to watch on T.V. Like Dad would say, "go Blue Jays, go". Our family would like to give a heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful staff and doctors at Fisher Personal Care Home for all the kind and compassionate care given to Dad over the past year and a half. To everyone who took time to pay a special visit, thank-you from the bottom of our hearts, and to the special friends in Pod 3, Sandy, Gerry, Margaret, Caroline, thank you for your passionate caring and just being there for our dad, husband - John. Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 10, 2016 at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Fisher Branch, MB at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Fisher Personal Care Home Foundation, Box 548, Fisher Branch, MB R0C 0Z0. The Angels gathered near your bed so very close to you, For they knew the pain and suffering that you were going through. We thought about so many things, as we held tightly to your hand, Oh how we wished that you were strong and happy once again, But your eyes were looking homeward to that place beyond the sky, When God held His outstretched arms, it was time to say good-bye. We struggled with our selfish thoughts, for we wanted you to stay, So we could walk and talk again, like we did - just yesterday. But God knew the answer, and knew He loved you so, So we gave to you life's greatest gift, the gift of letting go. REST IN PEACE, VICHNAYA PAM'YAT FISHER FUNERAL HOME INC. My heart is with you at this sad time in your life. He was a wonderful man who made the lives of others wonderful too. I know my Mom knew him well; she so enjoyed your visits, Lovey, when you came to the personal care home to visit her with Ed and Augustine. That was very special.
