AHAFIA KOSTYSHYN February 25, 1920 - June 9, 2016 It is with great sorrow that the family of Ahafia Kostyshyn announces her passing on June 9, 2016 at Holy Family Home. Ahafia, beloved Mama, Baba and Great-Baba passed away peacefully at the age of 96. She was predeceased by her husband Wasyl; infant daughter Vera; sister Yulia and brothers, Julian and Slawko in Ukraine; sons-in-law, Wasyl and Ken. Ahafia will be dearly missed by her daughters, Nadya Bailey, Luba Kostyshyn and Marika Haluk; her grandchildren, Tom (Dawn) Bailey, Tanya (Chris) Linklater, and Katya Haluk; and great-grandchildren, Danika, Julianna and Arianna Bailey and Matthew and Kate Linklater. Her memory will also be cherished by her extended family in Canada and Ukraine. Ahafia was born in Liubycha, Western Ukraine. Wasyl and Ahafia with two infant daughters escaped the advancing hostilities of the war through Slovakia to Austria. They immigrated to Canada in 1949 on a working contract and were employed on a sugar beet farm in Southern Alberta. After the birth of their third daughter, they moved to Winnipeg in 1951 to join other family members. Ahafia worked for many years for the Royal Bank of Canada. She was a life long member of Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League. Her summers were spent picking blueberries and mushrooms and tending to her beautiful garden. To the end she always enjoyed spending time outdoors. She was an avid reader with a keen interest in politics. Her greatest joy of all was time spent with her family. She was especially proud and supportive of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family will always cherish the memories of our family get togethers at Baba's house and the Ukrainian traditions she so proudly upheld. The family would like to thank the staff of St. John's Ward at Holy Family Home for their care and dedication. Divine Liturgy and Panahyda will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Vladimir and Olga, 115 McGregor St., with Rt. Rev. Msgr. M. Buyachok officiating. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Ahafia's memory to The Shevchenko Foundation, 952 Main Street, R2W 3P4, or Lubov SSMI Foundation, 1085 Main Street, R2W 1T9. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • We all so loved Auntie Usha, it's with a heavy heart that I have just come across this news (Oct. 2016). I was just a child when my family used to regularly visit auntie Usha at her beautiful home in Winnipeg at Ukrainian Christmas and Easter. Being with Auntie Usha and her daughters, were some of the absolute most memorable and cherished family gatherings I will ever experience. Auntie Usha always made us feel so welcome and loved, she always had a twinkle in her eye, a ready smile, and a warm hug. I have a feeling Emil, Usha, Nadya, Ken, and all our other dearly departed Ukrainian relatives (and now most recently Laurette), are living it up all together in heaven having the most boisterous conversations as well as the best holopchi ever. Love to you all....Patricia Wasylynko - Posted by: Patricia Wasylynko (relative) on: Oct 27, 2016

  • Marika, I am shocked and very saddened to read your mom's obit. Today we had mass for my mom (Nell Beyko) at the Holy Family chapel, then went up to St. John's ward to post mom's obit, and visit the residents and staff. I could not believe it when I saw your mom's pic beside my moms in memorium. When my mom passed, u gave me a hug.....I wish I was there to do the same for you. May they both rest in eternal peace.
