Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I have many memories of Lucy. When I was a child, living in Poland, Lucy came to visit our family. She was a beautiful young woman and I mostly remember her smiling face, talking to me in a soft pleasant voice or laughing. Later, after we immigrated to Canada, she lived in the same neighbourhood and we visited from time to time. She was married by then and adjusting to married life while I, in my teens, was adjusting to my new country and home. Our visits over the next few years were pretty much limited to family gatherings but I always enjoyed her company. We lost touch once I left Winnipeg but whenever I came back for a visit and we saw each other, she was genuinely interested in my life, my kids and enjoyed talking to my husband about teaching, education & child development. Once back in BC when talking on the phone with my parents or my sisters, catching up on family news, they would say on countless occasions: "Lucy says hello" or "Lucy sends her regards". Later, as we all got older and as Lucy's faith became more evident, I would hear: "Lucy is praying for you" or on those few occasions when we spoke personally on the phone she would end her conversation with: "God bless you and your family". The last time I saw Lucy, she was living at St. Benedicts Place and although glad to see me, she was more serious and perhaps less joyful as I remembered her as a child. Life happens, right? We sat and looked at pictures of herself and some other family photos from years gone by. I was fully aware of her issues, struggles and challenges, as well as the way those same issues, struggles and challenges impacted those who were around her. But for me, as one who got only to see her for brief visits, periodically, over a span of her life time, I could say that I got to see her at her best. And so, I will remember her that way.
