Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEFROSINA (ROSE) CHOMTSCHYN February 22, 1925 - July 17, 2016 On July 17, 2016 Efrosina passed away at Seven Oaks Hospital, with her family by her side. Beloved mother of Olia (Roman) and Oksana (Orest), baba of Larysa (Yuri), Katryna (Jonathan), Mark (Vanessa), Natalia and Olena, and pra baba of Liam, Alayna, Isaac, Nadya, Danika, and Luca. Also left to mourn her passing are her nieces and nephews in Ukraine. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 57 years, Stefan, in 2002; her parents, Oleksiy and Vekla; sisters, Kateryna and Nina; and Stefan's siblings. Born in Novaja Blahovischynka, Oblast Kherson, Rajon Mykolayiv, Ukraine, her life's journey was shaped by historic events of the time. During the Holodomor of 1932-1933, her father's wisdom led the family to flee their village for Crimea. Her career aspirations to become a teacher were cut short at 17 by the Second World War when in 1942, she was taken by the German Army as a slave labourer to Gottingen, Germany. Efrosina met Stefan in a displaced person's camp. They wed on August 5, 1946. With daughter Olia, they immigrated to Canada, arriving at Pier 21 on February 9, 1950 to join their sponsors, kumy, Marta, and Dmytro in Winnipeg. They were uprooted again a few weeks later by The Great Flood of 1950. Efrosina and Olia were evacuated to Portage La Prairie. Efrosina began work at Perth's Dry Cleaners and eventually spent 25 years at Globe Garments. She and Stefan embraced their new country of Canada and became active members of the Ukrainian community at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Cathedral, Chytalnia Prosvita, and Plast Pryjat. She traveled twice to her homeland, to her village in 1969, where she was reunited with her mother, and again with Stefan in 1983. Her happiest times were spent hosting and socializing with her kumy, family and friends. Efrosina became a resident of Holy Family Home in December 2011. We wish to thank Doctors Terry and Andrea Babick for their exceptional care, the nurses and aides of Sacred Heart Unit and the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate for their compassionate care. Thank you to the staff of Emergency and Unit 3, 5th floor at Seven Oaks Hospital for their care during her final days. Divine Liturgy and Panahyda will be celebrated by Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat Michael Buyachok on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at The Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha, 115 McGregor St. with interment at All Saints Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined.
