DAVID EDWARD MATTERN May 2, 1943 - July 10, 2016 David died on July 10 from a severe heart condition complicated by emphysema. Within in the last year he had issues with arthritis and mobility and he sometimes used of a cane for additional balance. Dave had prostate cancer in 2014 and recovered following radiation treatment. Because he hated to go to see a doctor, his heart condition and emphysema were undiagnosed. David was born in Winnipeg, MB; the son of Edward Mattern (1962) and Eva May Keen (1991). His father and mother, and grandparents lived on a farm in the vicinity of Dog Lake near Camper, MB. Dave was predeceased also by his Mom's second husband, Ernie Gross (2014). Dave spent his early years summers and holidays on the farm. Over the years, Dave also lived in: Sherwood Park in Edmonton, in Beaconia and finally in Plumas, MB. Left to mourn is his partner, Val Burch and her extended family; his son Paul (Lisa) and his grandchildren, Delaney and Jackson; his daughter, Kristin, and her mother, Bev Mattern, in Edmonton. David was married and divorced a second time to Mary Ellen Mattern (Schindler), also from Edmonton before returning to Manitoba in 2004. David worked for Ed Tel and Telus and was the Alberta Provincial Director of Dispatch for a number of years prior to his retirement at 55. Dave was an avid cyclist, cycling to work each day, and doing long distant biking weekends in the mountains with his peers. He continued to bike until a year ago. He was an avid camping enthusiast, and a good cross country skier. His family camped frequently when the children were young, and he led many wilderness camping and cross country ski treks for youth while living in Sherwood Park. David was artistic. He was a very good carver. He created wood spirit faces using cottonwood bark, also made wild dried flower arrangements incorporating tree mushrooms and milkweed seed pods. He took water colour and acrylic classes and produced a few pictures which he agreed could be framed. He built bird houses, carved large log mushrooms for the garden and loved photography. He purchased a good quality camera and has some wonderful photographs of birds, animals and vistas that caught his eye. He and Val bred and showed purebred Sealyham terriers; he loved holding newborn puppies. He handled his dog, and achieved Jasper's Championship status. His childhood dog, Shep, was the center of many of his happy stories. As well, Dave loved to play cards, crib being one of his favourites. He supported Val's passion as a gardener, creating and maintaining many flower beds at each of their properties. He was a man who was comfortable to be alone so reaching out to make new friends was not easy for him. He felt welcomed by Val's family and both he and Val continued to love and respect each other even when there were issues they were unable to resolve. Dave moved to Plumas, MB in November of 2015. Val wishes to thank the friends he met and those who assisted him there. Dave's wishes were to be cremated and his ashes scattered or interred close to his Grandparent's farm. A service of remembrance will take place in Winnipeg at a later date in August or September. Arrangements Entrusted To ANDERSON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME Ashern, Manitoba 1-866-293-4951

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • I apologize for leaving Dave's sister, Susan Norman (Bob) and her daughters Melanie and Terri, and their children from his obituary. In a rush to write and edit his obituary they were inadvertently omitted on the final copy. I am so sorry to have made this error. In addition, Dave's birthday was March 1943 not May. I have received verbal permission from the current owner of the property to scatter Dave's ashes on his grandparents original farm site. When the will has been probated a date will be set. Thank you to each of you for your kind words of sympathy. - Posted by: Val Burch () on: Aug 22, 2016
