EDITH MAY BRAINE (nee PHILP) (SHAND) Edith was born on her grandparents' farm near Killarney, MB, June 8, 1919, third daughter of Eber and Bessie Philp. The family moved to Neepawa in 1924 and again to McCreary in 1929 where Edith completed her secondary education. In 1937 she went to Winnipeg, attended Success Commercial College and was employed in the Income Tax Building. She married Raymond Shand in 1941 and they settled in Weston (Winnipeg). In 1954 Edith became a young widow with five children. She returned to work and had a long, successful career with the Provincial Government. In 1968 Edith married Arthur Wentworth (Went) Braine and they both retired to spend many happy years between their home in Falcon Lake and winters in various southern States. Went taught Edith how to golf - a game she mastered - and how to play bridge. She was unbeatable at cribbage and most other card games. Edith was predeceased by Went in 1997; sisters Evelyn (Herb) Pollock, Mona (Ernie) Brown, Jean (Bill) Francis and Muriel (Ron) Brooks; brother Mervin (Marie) Philp; son Richard Shand, and son-in-law Armand Le Sann. She is survived by her children Corinne (Tony) Lichacz, Lorraine (Ferdy) Kopeschny, Kathleen Le Sann, and Douglas (Lori) Shand; daughter-in-law Louise (David) Jobin; stepchildren Robert Braine, and Susan (Mel) Bilinski; also by 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. In keeping with Edith's wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no service. Memorial contributions, if so desired, may be made to CNIB Winnipeg or CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.
