HELEN HASTMAN It is with great sadness that our family announces the sudden passing of Helen Hastman of Lockport, MB, aged 71, on August 18, 2016, from complications following a motor vehicle accident. Helen is survived by Lawrence Hastman, her loving husband of 15 years. Also left to mourn is her daughter Helena Currie and three granddaughters, Charly, Emma and Lara who all live in England. Step children, Tim, Leslie and Laurie, her husband Pierre and their children Katrina and Erik. Over the years Helen had several interesting careers. When she retired from being a lab technologist in Beausejour she achieved a lifelong dream writing her memoirs and self-publishing her book which was sold across Canada. Helen enjoyed her weekly reading sessions with the residents of Betel Home in Selkirk. Helen had a zest for life and enjoyed many pursuits. Each year, along with her husband, she enjoyed sowing and harvesting a vigorous garden and taking professional photographs at every opportunity. Over the years she very much enjoyed travelling with Lawrence. She would plan and map out their lengthy journey and as Lawrence drove, she would take pictures along the way and collect other local memorabilia. Months later, when she was home again she would create very detailed and interesting travel journals so they could remember their trips with vivid clarity. In her younger years, she enjoyed scuba diving in the Caribbean, horseback riding and travelling throughout Europe. A celebration of Helen's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 26, 2016 in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, MB. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

  • We met Helen for the first time at the Kish Family Reunion last year. She was a fun loving free spirit who wasn't afraid to speak her mind and we are going to miss her dearly. - Posted by: Deborah, Bill and Billie-Marie Stringer (John Kish's youngest daughter) on: Aug 24, 2016

  • Our condolences go out to you Lawrence and your family. We lost a true caring person. We will miss you Helen but be forgotten. You touched so many people. - Posted by: Peter and Vanessa Swirski (Friends) on: Aug 21, 2016

  • I was shocked to hear of the sudden death of my Canadian friend Helen. Whenever she visited her daughter in England she and I would spend some time together and we kept in touch by email. She kindly sent me a copy of her recently published book "Displaced Person". She was always a vibrant, interesting person. She liked England but she was a very proud Canadian. She and I planned to visit her home town in Austria in the future. My thoughts are with her family both in England and Canada at this very sad time. - Posted by: Christine Moorhouse (Friend in England) on: Aug 20, 2016

  • I so enjoyed getting to know "Little Helen" at the Kish family reunion last August. I treasure the book she wrote about her life. Our deepest sympathies to you, Helen's family. May your memories give you strength. - Posted by: Anne Marie Sauer and husband, Brian (Niece) on: Aug 19, 2016
