DMYTRO PRODAN October 13, 1920 - August 10, 2016 Peacefully, and surrounded by his family, Dmytro Prodan passed away on August 10, 2016 after a brief illness at the age of 95. Remaining to forever cherish his memory are his four children: Irene, Christine (George), Orest (Ruth), and Larisa (Taras); his four grandchildren Lara (Branden), Alia (Paul), Eva (Patrick), and Zenya; and one great-grandson, Conner, as well as many nieces and nephews in Ukraine. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Jaroslawa in 2010. Dmytro was born on October 13, 1920 in the city of Bilivtsi, Ukraine. He was the youngest son of Michaylo and Anna. On May 21, 1944 he married his fiancée, Jaroslawa. His medical studies were cut short with the outbreak of the Second World War, and Dmytro and Jaroslawa decided to seek a safer life in Canada. They spent their entire life in Winnipeg. In Winnipeg Dmytro successfully completed his Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Manitoba. He was then employed by The John Howard and Elizabeth Fry Society as a senior case worker until his retirement. After retirement, he returned as a Senior Executive Director for one additional year. Dmytro was incredibly dedicated and devoted to creating a happy life for his family in Canada. He was a very patient, loving, and intelligent father who continually offered guidance and support whenever it was needed. He gave selflessly to his family, always seeking to make their lives easier in any manner he could. Dad cherished and loved his grandchildren and great-grandson, and endlessly sought ways to make them smile. Dmytro took pride in his beautiful Ukrainian heritage, and instilled a love of the language, traditions, and culture in both his children and grandchildren. He volunteered at PLAST for many years (a Ukrainian scouting organization), the Ukrainian Canadian Social Services, Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Oseredok and was a long-standing member of the Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral. He was very generous and made regular annual donations to many Ukrainian institutions. Dad placed a great value on education and encouraged all of his children to pursue their individual academic interests. Dmytro was incredibly gifted at creating and repairing almost anything. No problem was an obstacle for Dad. He loved spending time at his cottage which he designed and built completely with his own hands. Mom and Dad spent many summers enjoying the company of family and many friends at the lake. He pursued many hobbies and activities. At age 80, Dad designed and constructed a photo lab and at age 90, Dad bought and restored a Bayliner yacht. Over the years, Mom and Dad enjoyed winters travelling to Hawaii, Arizona and Florida as well as after 40 years in Canada, visiting relatives in Ukraine. He and his wife Jaroslawa enjoyed 50 consecutive PLAST Malankas and was always happiest when surrounded by his family and friends. The family would like to express a sincere thank you to Hiwet at the Victoria General Hospital for her kindness and compassion during Dad's final days. Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Rt. Rev. Msgr. Michael Buyachok at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 16 at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral. Interment followed at All Saints Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations in Dmytro's memory may be made to Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral,115 McGregor St., Winnipeg R2W 5J7, or a charity of your choice. VICHNAYA PAMYAT!
