Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryISABEL FREIDA WALKER August 28, 1925 - September 15, 2016 Isabel was born to John and Caroline Walker in the Tupper District of Plumas, Manitoba. She attended Maitland, a country school, located two and one-quarter miles from her farm home. After leaving home she worked at various jobs in Winnipeg. She then took her practical Nurses Training. Part of this training included a year of work experience at the Ste. Rose Hospital, St. Amant Center, Ninette Sanatorium and the King George Hospital. She retired from the Maternity Ward at St. Boniface Hospital in 1985, after working in nursing for 35 years. Isabel was at the King George Hospital, during the 1950 flood, when her patients were evacuated by boat and transferred to Portage la Prairie. Later she was on the Polio Ward caring for patients confined to an iron lung. She always fondly remembered Lena Barker, a polio victim, who lived for 15 years with the aid of an iron lung. Her sister Doreen remembers the time when they, together with Ed Riendeau, would take a 12 year old Inuit boy from the Northwest Territories, paralyzed from the waist down, out for ice cream cones. During the last years of her life dementia had taken away Isabel's memory of all family members, except that of her brother Norman. In one visit to her at Vista Park Lodge she was looking at the few pictures she had remaining on the walls of her room. One picture was of Jesus praying in Gethsemane. She walked to the picture, reached upward, and said, "that's Jesus". She had made prior arrangements for her own funeral service. On her memorial monument she requested two items, the Bible and the Crucifixion Cross. Isabel enjoyed traveling. She took trips to Mexico, Yukon, Germany, and the United States. She enjoyed visiting with her family members, nieces, and nephews. Her sense of humour was always evident whenever she recalled events that had occurred throughout her life. She was predeceased by her parents John and Caroline (nee Preisentanz); two brothers and two sisters in infancy or early childhood; her brother Edgar; her brothers-in-law, Edward Mauthe and Edward Riendeau. She is survived by two sisters, Alvina Mauthe and Doreen Riendeau; two brothers, Walter (Bernice), Norman (Adele) and 14 nieces and nephews. She was a resident of Thorvaldson Care Centre, Parkview Place, and Vista Park Lodge since 2005. In 2011 she moved to Vista Park Lodge. The family would especially like to thank the staff, nurses, and Dr. Ramgoolam of Vista Park Lodge. The Funeral service for Isabel will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba with Pastor Cameron Schnarr officiating.
