JACOBA WILLEMINA BRODA (nee TIMMERMANS) Family and friends knew her as Oma. Oma will be lovingly remembered by her children: Angela (Jerry), Fred (Kim); her grandchildren Darryl (Cristylee), Garret, Carra (Kyle), Hallie, Tyler; and great-granddaughter Layla. Born in Utrecht, Netherlands, on December 9, 1925, Jacoba was the youngest child in a large loving family. Her dearest sister Cornelia is now the last of seventeen siblings. Jacoba and Walter came to Canada in 1954 as newlyweds. Despite living in Canada for over 60 years, Oma's roots were in the Netherlands. Oma was fortunate to "go home" several times and to have family come and visit her at Hillside Beach, it was her favourite place. Oma was the lead cheerleader for her grandchildren in everything they did. A devoted sports fan, she was a regular fan at their hockey, soccer and volleyball games. Food meant love in Oma's home and we all loved the Stroopwafle, Nasi Goreng and Gouda on bread. Best of all were the treats she kept in the hutch. It's not hard to crack a smile when remembering a conversation with Oma. She never lost her thick Dutch accent and in her own unique way she enthusiastically shared stories or her account of current events. Oma was sharp, interested in learning new things and very active. She enjoyed gardening, long rides on her green bicycle, walks to The Point, lawn bowling, Wii, puzzles, board games of all types, and cards. Oma was a fierce competitor in everything from Guesstures to Spoons. Oma's special talent was her crafts. We will all cherish the beautiful handmade hats, sweaters, scarves and baby blankets she gave us, each one made to her standard of perfection. Throughout her life Oma loved to travel and go "on an outing". Recently her travels were closer to her new home at Deer Lodge Centre. Oma enjoyed walks to Assiniboine Park, visits to Sargent Sundae, feeding the fish in the pond, relaxing outdoors in the garden and attending the special events at the Centre. Our family is grateful to all the wonderful staff at Deer Lodge Centre, Lodge 4, for the care and support you gave to Oma. Oma had several pets and her dog Tuggs was her very favourite. If friends choose, in lieu of flowers please support Oma's passion for rescue pets with a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of your choosing. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a private service will be held on Friday, October 7, 2016. A party in Oma's honour is planned to celebrate a life well lived.
