DARRELL THURSTON June 18, 1961 - October 1, 2016 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle and grandfather, at the age of 55, on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the Victoria Hospital, surrounded by his family. Left to mourn and cherish his memory are Darrell's beloved wife Line, son Justin (Joanne and Alain), father Ronald, brother Gordon (Liette), sister and best friend Darlene, nephew Stéphane (Kshaunna), nephew and godson Colin; Line's family and sons Colin (Lindsay), Paul (Kristen), granddaughters, Bryn, Avery and Maverick; godson Chris Larocque (Paula), numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and his sports and bingo friends. Darrell was predeceased by his mother Léa in 2012. Darrell was a selfless individual with a big heart when it came to helping his family, friends and even total strangers. For many years he was involved with the St. Louis Centre, charter member of St. Boniface Optimist Club. Even after his cancer diagnosis in May 2015 he continued to manage the St. Louis Bingo, curling, bowling, and baseball leagues. Darrell also volunteered his time to many Optimist fundraisers, events, meetings, and loved playing Santa for the children at the St. Louis and Notre Dame Recreational Centres. Darrell really enjoyed his work at the Notre Dame Rec Centre, especially driving the Zamboni. He thrived on the praise received from his boss Marc Rougeau and from the Board of Directors. Darrell's highlights of his life were spending time with his son, Justin, and becoming Pépère to Bryn (three years), Avery (eight months) and Maverick (two months). His 2015 Christmas wish was granted when Colin and Lindsay's first child was born in August 2016 and celebrating his son Justin's 25th birthday. The family would like to thank his nurses at the Buhler Cancer Centre of the Victoria Hospital and the 4th Floor Acute Care Ward for their exceptional care and compassion. Special thanks to Dr. Vallerie L Gordon and Dr. Chris Ogaranko. A funeral service will be held at Holy Family Church, 778 Archibald Street, on Saturday, October 15, 2016. Seating and Video to commence at 10:00 a.m.; Mass at 10:30 a.m. with Father Armand Le Gal o.m.i. Celebration of Life to follow at the Notre Dame Recreational Centre (271 ave de la Cathédrale) from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. A private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please pass the gift of giving to others with a donation made in Darrell's memory to a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I have known Darryl for many, many years. As a former minor seminarian, Darryl and his family lived next door. I would often see him or his older brother cruising in the area with their father's humongous car. After grad., I often spotted him at Roll and Dough bakery helping out his brother. Then, I got involved in the St. Louis baseball league where Darrel played for many years. I firmly believe that he is the reason the league was still going after 30 + years. He was a good person with a huge heart. He loved life and enjoyed being with everyone. I'll miss his laughter and his " Joie de vivre". - Posted by: Luc Roy (Friend) on: Oct 14, 2016
