He is survived by his mother, Betty Yellon, in Toronto. Born in England, Rod came to Canada at an early age with his parents, and grew up in Montreal. He attended McGill University, and pursued further studies at Oxford before taking up a position in the Department of Political Studies at the University of Manitoba, where he taught for four decades, retiring in 2009. Rod was a dedicated teacher and researcher. In retirement he continued his researches in Soviet history and political theory, and volunteered regularly at fund drives for various charities. A man of broad cultural interests, Rod especially loved opera. In recent years deteriorating health severely hampered his mobility, but his intellectual energy and challenging nature remained vigorous to the end. A memorial gathering will be held at his home; details to be announced in next weekend's Free Press.
