Born: Apr 10, 1928
Date of Passing: Oct 13, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBERNICE WEGIER (nee MYSLICKI) April 10, 1928 - October 13, 2016 It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Bernice Wegier on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at the Riverview Health Centre, at the age of 88 years. Bernice was born in Coniston, Ontario to Mary (Pelechaty) and Thomas Myslicki. She and her younger brothers, Stanley and Morris, grew up on the family's farm at the foot of the Duck Mountains in the Kulish District in the RM of Ethelbert. Bernice moved to Winnipeg at the age of 16 to start working and help support her family. She missed her family deeply but was blessed to find a home with Hymie and Jennie Glassman and their children. Bernice lived with the family more than seven years until she met and married Carl in August of 1952. After the birth of their two children, Glenn and Debbie, Bernice was a stay at home Mom. She eventually went to work in the housekeeping department at St. Boniface Hospital from which she retired at age 63 after 25 years of service. Bernice was a long time member of the Catholic Women's League at St. Andrew Bobola Roman Catholic Church where she established lasting friendships. Bernice's true nature was gentle, forgiving and generous. Her greatest joys were her family and garden. Her faith and spirit remained strong even after 58 years of marriage ended when Carl passed away in 2010 and her health declined. She adapted to three very different living environments in less than three years, maintained her sharp wit and looked at each day through a new set of eyes. Bernice's last year was spent at Riverview Personal Care Home where she once again gradually began to socialize and deliver her winning smiles. She was extremely grateful for visits from loved ones, which would make her day. Her immediate response was "I am so happy to see you!" Debbie and Glenn extend heartfelt appreciation to those on CD 2 who helped Mom maintain quality of life in her last year and days. Special thanks go out to: Sheldon, whose sense of humour and compassion won Mom over early on; Ashley, whose angelic manner provided comfort and trust; and Brittany, whose love and respect helped Mom feel accepted and valued. Bernice will be lovingly remembered by her son Glenn (Lorraine), daughter Debbie, grandchildren Jayme and Matthew, great-grandchildren Quinn and Ruby, as well as nephews, nieces, cousins and long time friend Olga Berg. A funeral service celebrating Bernice's life will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in memory of Bernice may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. "The HEART remembers what the mind cannot" E.J. COUTU & CO. As teenagers Debbie and I spent a lot of time together. I was invited to the cabin for a weekend and had an awesome time. I remember the delicious smells permeating the cabin and Bernice checking on me to see if I needed anything. She was a caring, loving woman who also had a sharp look if she thought we might be getting into trouble. Debbie and I would straighten up till we got outside and started giggling and grateful it was only a look! Bernice's house was spotless and I always was welcomed with a big smile. One day I arrived to find a baby and thought Deb had forgotten to tell me of a new sibling. They were fostering the baby. That shows you just how compassionate Bernice was. My heart feels joy when I reminisce my memories; I hope all of your memories bring you some sense of comfort. I know as time goes by your comfort will become love and joy. Don and I know you and Glenn did everything you could to help your mom live her life to the fullest. - Posted by: Barb (Hawkins) Cnockaert (Friend of Debbie & Glenn) on: Oct 18, 2016
