BRUCE HAYLES It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Bruce Hayles, our loving husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa, on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Bruce was born in Winnipeg on January 19, 1930 to Charles E. and Martha (Mae) Hayles. He grew up in River Heights and continued his career in Winnipeg until he retired. He married Helen Barker in 1953 and they had two children - Sharon and William (Bill) Bruce. Bruce followed in his father's footsteps in the grain trade in Winnipeg in 1948 with Canadian Consolidated Grain Co. and worked in many areas of the company having spent time in Elie, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario. In 1953, he became a cash grain broker and a member of the Winnipeg Grain/Commodity Exchange. From 1967 to 1978, he was Vice President of Wincliffe Shipping, Ltd., which was an agent and broker for Hall Corporation Shipping, Ltd. of Montreal. He then became President of Mission Terminal and Les Elevateures Trois Rivière, Les Grain Lac Superior Services de Grain Laviotte - Trans Lake Chartering until 2007. Not wanting to sit idle in retirement, he took the position of Vice President of Soumat, Inc. until 2011. Bruce was a very successful and passionate advocate for the grain industry. He held the highest elected position as Chairman of the Winnipeg Grain Exchange, serving two terms. His other passions beside his family were hockey, sailing and golf. He was a member of the St. Charles Country Club since his childhood and stayed active playing golf until just last year. Additionally, Bruce was a longtime member of the Manitoba Club and enjoyed playing snooker there on Saturday mornings. Bruce will be fondly remembered as a true gentleman; full of integrity, kindness and an authentic nature that can be held to the highest standard for all men. He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Helen Hayles, daughter Sharon (Paul), son Bill (Julie), granddaughter Jamie (Mike), and great-grandsons Nathan and Brody. In keeping with Bruce's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family celebration will be held. Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I was fortunate indeed to know Bruce when Wincliffe reported to me at Halco. Bruce taught me a great deal about the workings of the grain trade even taking me put to see a field of rapeseed and the purple stretching g out to the horizon is a sight I'll always thank him for bringing to me. One little funny story of our few times together. For many years Halco used to treat grain customers and brokers in Winnipeg to an annual oyster party and we'd fly two cases of raw oysters up from Montreal for the party. At one year's event I was curious why the centerpiece was an ice sculpture of a sheep. Bruce said with a smile that he'd asked the caterer who was Greek to arrange for a "ship" but it got lost in the translation. Great guy. - Posted by: David Bkakely (Business colleague VP of Halco Inc. ) on: Jan 22, 2018

  • My mother and father were very good friends with Helen and Bruce and family when we lived in Winnipeg. In fact, I was going through old photographs recently and found some of us all together on vacation in cabins at Detroit Lakes. Great memories. I am writing on behalf of my father, who passed away many years ago and my mother, who is now suffering with dementia - to be their voice - when they are unable. Heartfelt condolences to Helen, Sharon and Bill. We know the pain you are feeling and we are wishing you peace. Bruce was a wonderful man; we are all blessed to have known him and call him a dear friend. • I was saddened to hear that the grain industry lost a wonderful advocate in the person of Bruce Hayles. Although I did not know Bruce well, he did graciously agree to take part in our oral history project "Voices of the Grain Trade" a few years ago. In the few hours we spent together, Bruce shared his deep roots in the industry and his love for it. His voice and his memories will continue to be an important part of our collection and a lasting tribute to Bruce's contribution to the industry. Our condolences to his family at this very sad time. - Posted by: Nancy Perozzo (Secretary, Friends of Grain Elevators) on: Nov 15, 2016

  • So sorry to hear of your father's passing Bill. Became reaquainted with your father in 2014 at St. Charles Country Club where I now work after retiring. We had several great conversations about hockey memories from St. James. Your father was a true gentleman and it was a pleasure to speak with him after so many years. - Posted by: Jeff Coates (childhood friend of Bill Hayles) on: Nov 13, 2016

  • Sorry to hear of Bruce's passing. I would like to offer my condolences to Helen and all the family. Bruce was a good example of what an ideal neighbour should be. I would like to thank him for his years of service on the condo board. Rene Deleurme (formerly of apt 204) - Posted by: Rene Deleurme (Friend & Neighbour) on: Nov 11, 2016

  • I was lucky enough to be able to spend many a morning with Bruce in the coffee shop of the grain exchange building discussing hockey especially when both of us were directors of the St. James Canucks of the former AAA hockey league. Those 6:30 a.m. hockey practices were a lot of fun for all involved. My thoughts and prayers are extended to Helen, Sharon and Billy. - Posted by: gary whyte (hockey friend) on: Nov 10, 2016

  • So sorry to hear of Bruce's passing. My condolences to Helen and all his family. He was a gentleman and a good friend to have. I served with him on the condo board at our building. We had many of the meeting in his elegant dining room. My cocktail hour with him and Helen were always enjoyable. John Chabai at 103 - Posted by: John Chabai (Friend) on: Nov 10, 2016
