ELSIE RUTH BUFFIE (nee LEIER) March 29, 1930 - November 15, 2016 Peacefully, on Tuesday, November 15, our beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Elsie, passed away at the age of 86. She will be deeply missed and forever loved by her husband of 66 years, John, and her seven children, John and Debbie, Rick and Janet, Pam and Glenn Elsasser, Glenn and Andrea, Shelley and Shawn Carlson, Sherrey and Graham Jones, and Kim and Teddy Helgason; all of her 17 grandchildren, whom she loved dearly and was so very proud of, Jonathan (Jessica), Brian (Marie), Michael, Clinton, Deanna, Jillian, Ryan, Kaitlyn (Jeff), Mitchell, Nicole, Michael, Jane, Terence, Kyla, Cody (Vanny), Shane, and Luke; and her precious great-grandchildren, Hurin, Owen and Stefan. She was so looking forward to her fourth great-grandchild on his way. Elsie is survived by her brother Edward Leier and his wife Pat, sisters Hertha Matthes and Marilyn Woytowich, along with John's family, and many loved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Edward and Erna Leier, her sister Rita Roth, her brothers-in-law, Willis and Bob, as well as her husband's parents, John and Mary Buffie, and his many family members. Elsie was born on March 29, 1930 in Niverville, MB. She was raised in Winnipeg and thought she would always be a city girl until she was swept off her feet by the love of her life, John. Elsie and John married on October 20, 1950 and made Selkirk their life long home. She loved to cook and bake for all who came. Mom and Dad's home was always open to their large extended families and so very many friends. The love and devotion she had for our father and us was undeniable. Elsie, Mom and Grandma, we are so blessed and thankful for all the love and memories you leave for us to cherish. You will remain in our hearts forever. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 19 at 1:00 p.m. in The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd on Highway No. 9 in Selkirk, MB. The family would like to extend our sincerest thanks to Dr. Demsas and the nursing staff at the Selkirk and District General Hospital for their wonderful care and constant concern. Flowers are gratefully declined, but if you so wish, donations may be made in Elsie's memory to The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Selkirk, Manitoba. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.

  • When I think of my auntie Elsie, one thing that pops right into my head is wonderful cook! Once, when a crew of Buffies drove through Minneapolis. They all stopped to spend the night at our house (Uncle Albert, Auntie Elsie, Uncle Johnny, my mom and dad). I asked Auntie if she would show me how to make kraut peroges. We ended up making 150 of them! I don't know if she knew how to make anything in small batches! Her generosity showed through so many things. We enjoyed the delicious meat and cabbage filled buns for months to come! Also, my dear auntie Elsie and I share the same birthday. I always have, and always will remember her with much love! - Posted by: Patti Hillier (Niece) on: Nov 18, 2016
