Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHARRY (HERSHEY) BRAUNSTEIN The family of Harry (Hershey) Braunstein are sad to announce his peaceful passing on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the Simkin Centre in Winnipeg, age 94. Hershey was predeceased by his siblings Reuben Braunstein of Vancouver, Sally Shinewald and Toby Kessler of Winnipeg. He is survived by nieces and nephews in Winnipeg, Vancouver and Edmonton, grandnieces and nephews, great-grandnieces and nephews, cousins, relatives and many friends. Hershey was born in Tullymet, Saskatchewan on September 17, 1922. His father passed away when he was only two years old and the Jewish Orphanage of Winnipeg became his home and his brother Reuben's home. Hershey enjoyed his years at the orphanage and became lifelong friends with those he grew up with. Hershey served in the Navy in the Second World War. After the War, Hershey's mother, sister and brothers moved to Winnipeg and they all became a family again. Hershey was always one to look for adventure. He worked all over the world, often as a waiter, in Florida, New York, California, Las Vegas and Israel. He took every opportunity in between jobs to visit those he was close to. Eventually he returned to Winnipeg, opening Hershey's Grocery at the corner of Newton and Main, and then retired to a life centred around family and friends. Hershey spent his later years at the Simkin Centre where he was friends with everybody. Funeral services for Hershey were held Monday, November 21, 2016 at the Bnay Abraham Cemetery, Winnipeg. Donations in Hershey's name can be made to the Winnipeg Jewish Orphanage Alumni Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba.
