DAVID TERUO OYE With great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the unexpected passing of David Teruo Oye at the age of 58 on December 9, 2016. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Susan, son Adam, daughter Jennifer, and sisters Theresa, Linda (Bruce) Koskie, May (David) Shipp from Whitby, niece Lauren (Kyle) Schroer, great niece Lily, and nephew Brian (Meghan) Shipp. David was predeceased by his mother Sue in 2011 and father Tom in 2012. David was a West End boy who grew up on Minto Street. He went to Greenway, Sargent Park and Daniel McIntyre schools and kept his teachers on their toes. He went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Manitoba in 1980. David began his love of judo at the young age of eight and competed in many tournaments. After his competitive career, he coached the judo clubs at the University of Manitoba and Japanese Cultural Centre. In 2013, David became one of the few judokas to obtain his Rokudan 6th degree black belt from Judo Canada. David followed several career paths which included Sperry Univac, New Flyer and Lockheed Martin. He found his perfect fit with Old Dutch Foods Ltd. where he worked for the last 18 years and was the Director of Purchasing and Logistics. David enjoyed golfing with his many long-time friends and business associates. David met many people through the Canadian Snack Food Association who became close friends and he always looked forward to the annual conference in the fall. Above all else, David was a family man who cherished his wife and children. He took great joy in coaching Adam and Jen's mini-soccer teams and would never miss any of Adam's hockey games or Jen's dance recitals. Even after his parents' passing, Sundays always remained the day that his siblings and his family got together to catch up on the week's events at dinner and some friendly card games. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, December 18 at 2:00 p.m., at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in David's memory to the Manitoba Buddhist Temple, 39 Tecumseh Street, Winnipeg, R3E 0J8, or the Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba (JCAM), 180 McPhillips St., Winnipeg, R3E 2J9. Although I hadn't seen David in years (except at a distance at Folklorama) I will always see the David as a teenager and young man, with that spark in his eye, and his strength ans determination as he dashed into one room then out to another with some great mission or goal to work on. Again, my deepest sympathies to all. - Posted by: Karen (Kucera) Bate () on: Jan 15, 2017

  • Words cannot express the sadness of the sudden passing of Dave. I knew Dave as a young judoka as a competitor he was a warrior ,off the mat he was a gentleman. I will dearly miss David. Our condolences to Susan, Adam and Jennifer from Cindy, Jarrett and myself. - Posted by: Darrell Oye (Cousin) on: Dec 14, 2016

  • Dear Susan and family, I am so sad to hear about your loss...the whole families loss. Although many years always seem to pass by in between meeting up with David, it was like we had seen each other the previous week. Always cheery, somewhat wise crack sense of humour but never over the edge and his ever present chuckle. I know he cherished his family and for that makes this loss very difficult. My wife Kit and myself offer our deepest condolences to Sue, Adam, Jennifer and all of the Oye family. - Posted by: Michael Oye (Cousin) on: Dec 14, 2016

The Westcoast Oyes send their condolences to all of you. David you will be missed. Joanne - Posted by: Joanne Oye (Cousin) on: Dec 14, 2016

  • Dear Susan and family, I was just informed of the very sad news about David. During my ten years at WILD Flavors, David became a customer for whom I held a great deal of respect. He was tough but fair. Having left WILD two years ago, we (unfortunately) lost contact; however, I will never forget our belting out Bohemian Rhapsody together at the Snack Food Association in Huntsville a couple of years ago! May all of the good memories of David as a husband, father and friend sustain you during these difficult days. Sincerely, Michael Litvak - Posted by: Michael Litvak (Former Supplier of Seasonings) on: Dec 14, 2016
