GEORGE E. GUEST Peacefully on Saturday, December 10, 2016 George Guest passed away at Oakview Care Centre at the age of 102. He is survived by his daughter Alice; grandson Christopher Mason; great granddaughters Kya and Ali; grandson Michael (Patricia) Mason; and great-granddaughters Alexandra and Abigail. He was predeceased by his wife, of almost seventy years, Irene and his youngest daughter Georgina Mason-Ormiston. George grew up in Indian Head, Saskatchewan and here he learned his gardening skills from his father, an estate gardener from England. In 1936 he began working for the CPR as a gardener for Indian Head, Sintaluta and later Kamloops stations. In the early 1940's he tended the small park across from the railway station in Winnipeg where the Countess of Dufferin was then located. He took over the position of Chief Horticulturalist for the CPR in Western Canada from Mr. R. Almey in 1947. In 1959 when the three large green houses were closed at Weston Shops he became Supervisor of Labours until his retirement. In retirement he enjoyed traveling west with Irene to visit friends and relatives. He became an avid golfer and curler and enjoyed summer time at Victoria Beach with the grandkids. Having grown up in the Depression when you went without or created what you needed - George created - making much of his family's original furniture. This creative need continued throughout his life. Even in his very late nineties when he could no longer manage his tools he took up loom knitting and knit over 200 woolen hats for family, friends and those in need. Everyone who knew George recognized his creative genious. This need to create continues with his great granddaughters. The family wishes to thank the staff at Sturgeon Creek II for their patience and kindness over the last several years and the staff at Oakview for their care during his short time there. In keeping with George's wishes cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Maureen and I offer our most sincere condolences to Alice and the rest of your family. Our family were neighbors and friends with George, Irene, Alice and Georgina beginning in the early 1950’s. I will always remember as a young boy being fascinated with George’s immaculate garden, woodworking and inventive, creative talent. He was never too busy as I walked by his open garage doors to stop what he was doing to say hello, answer foolish questions and carefully explain things he was doing or making that always seemed fascinating. George and Irene were cherished friends with my late parents. As I grew up, left home and got married we still kept in touch with the Guests, visiting them occasionally. We were always treated as royalty when they entertained us in their long time home at 801 Ashburn Street. It was a true privilege to have known this fine gentleman. He made the world a better place. May he rest eternally in peace. - Posted by: Robert A. Dryburgh (Friend and ex-neighbor) on: Dec 17, 2016

  • I would like to pass on my condolences to Alice, Chris, Mike and families. George was an amazing talented loving man who I have not and never will forget. Rob Ormiston - Posted by: Rob Ormiston (Former son-in-law) on: Dec 17, 2016

  • Our condolences to you all! George was a special and generous human being! A one of a kind! He could make beautiful things from virtually nothing, some of which we treasure to this day! - Posted by: Kathy and Dave McKibbin (Friend) on: Dec 17, 2016
