WILLIAM GIL RYALL Bill passed away quietly at home on December 20, 2016 surrounded by his immediate family in the room he handcrafted himself. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Judy; his sons, Michael; Daniel, his wife Val and daughters, Mackenzie and Finley; and Brady, his wife Julie, and son, Rowan; his brother Gary and his family, as well as his sisters-in-law, Joanne Ursell, Mona Taylor, and his many nieces and nephews. Bill was born in St. Boniface, grew up in Earl Grey, attended St. Paul's High School and College, taught in Miami, Manitoba and then attended law school at the University of Manitoba. He raised his family in Charleswood, and retired to Headingley and Palm Desert, California. Bill loved hockey and played over the span of eight decades, the latest three with the Sunday morning group at Dutton. A Habs fan as a youngster, as an original WHA season ticket holder, he soon became loyal to the Jets. Mostly, he will be known for his decades of volunteer coaching in Charleswood. Coach Bill was known and respected by generations of hockey players in Winnipeg, from the novice to the professionals. He was a determined competitor who combined a masterful tactical approach with an inspiring attitude that was successful enough to win many City and Provincial Championships at various levels and ages. For the past thirty years he has been an avid cyclist logging thousands of miles a year. He particularly loved touring Europe on his bike with his wife Judy and their friends. One of his greatest accomplishments was climbing Mont Ventoux and Alpe D'Huez at the age of 70. He founded a cycle group in Palm Desert. Grandpa loved taking Rowan for bike rides in his chariot for a "cappin-chino" and a cookie; and conversing in Francais over dinner with Finley. Bill was an avid gardener, landscaping each of his four properties. Always committed to staying healthy, Bill worked out at the Reh-Fit Centre and looked forward to having coffee with his ladies. As woodworker and all-around handy man, he had many friends and family members who benefitted from his expertise. An accomplished litigator who was one of the founding members of the Canadian Transport Lawyers Association, Bill worked his entire professional career as a barrister and partner at the law firm, Fillmore Riley. The family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers, especially Drs. Johann Raubenheimer and Cornelius Woelk. The messages of support from his family and friends helped Bill over the past couple of years. In keeping with Bill's wishes, cremation has taken place and a funeral service will be held at St. Ignatius Church, Stafford and Corydon on December 27, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to CancerCare Manitoba, Siloam Mission, or the Heart & Stroke Foundation. For many Winnipeggers, Bill will be remembered for his passion for winning, his work ethic, his generosity, his boundless physical energy, his sharp sense of humour, and his dedication to his family. Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho' We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. Bill and I met in first year College at St Pauls College, University of Manitoba,in 1959. We became fast friends almost immediately and had great times together in our four years there. Our friendship continued, even though we lived in separate cities. It was enhanced by his marriage to Judy and the arrival of their three sons, and my Marriage to Maureen and the arrival of our two daughters. Bill had a fierce will to succeed and his highly competitive spirit made him a tremendous athlete. He gave much to his community and made life a better place for many. Maureen and I express our condolences to Judy . and the boys and wives and grandchildren; Bill will be missed from our lives, but not forgotten. On our journey we meet many souls whom we interact, exchange energy, that enhances our growth. We share experiences. We break bread. We share laughter. But often comes time to say goodbye. We can't always choose timing but we can choose the words of our heart. Bill, you were truly a great neighbour and a friend and you became family in no time. Bill, you will truly be missed! - Posted by: Satvir (Former neighbour ) on: Dec 25, 2016

I first met Bill in January of 2013 at the corner of Cook St. & Gerald Ford Drive, which was one of the 3 meeting places for Bill's cycling group in Palm Desert. Like most people, when you meet Bill you wanted the pleasure of his company. If Bill was a used car salesman, he would have sold a lot of used cars. I am sure that Bill has already organized a cycling group with the angels. When our time comes to depart, we will be looking forward to the wonderful cycling routes that Bill has waiting for us. God bless you Bill. Joy & Ron MacKenzie - Posted by: Ron & Joy MacKenzie (A member of the Bill Ryall cycling group) on: Dec 25, 2016

Mr. Ryall had a great impact of my life as both a hockey player and a person. I never had more enjoyable years in the sport then the years I spent playing for Mr. Ryall. He was a tremendous teacher of both hockey and life skills. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this difficult time. Thank you for all you did Mr. Ryall. May you rest in peace. - Posted by: Wade Pluchinske (Friend) on: Dec 24, 2016

My life has been blessed in many ways, Bill and Judy entered my life when I was 10 yrs old, Bill became my new Hockey coach! It wasn't long after this initial meeting that my own father passed away suddenly! Bill and Judy were instrumental in helping me cope with such a loss. This unequaled relationship has continued until now, my family is sad but thankful for everything Bill has given us. My middle son was named Ryall in Bill's honour 22 yrs ago, he reminds me everyday how special Bill and his family are to us. Many heartfelt hugs and love from the Ledyard family to the Ryall family. We love you! - Posted by: Grant Ledyard (Friend/Admirer/Player) on: Dec 24, 2016

My parents, Rita and Gordon Baxter, had a deep respect for Bill Ryall. My brothers and I grew up in Charleswood and were one of the hockey-loving families who quickly learned that Bill's name was synonymous with integrity, generosity, and selfless commitment. On behalf of our family, I offer sincere condolences on such a great loss. - Posted by: Tannis (Baxter) Niziol () on: Dec 24, 2016

I'm am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr Ryall. The years I spent playing for Bill were truly magical. He taught us all so many great lessons and man did we have fun. I remember not only the hockey but the trips to Frost Fire mountain for a day of skiing, him taking us down to see the latest Warren Miller film or the pool partys in the summer. I'm truly grateful for being able to be a part of those Roblin Park teams. I'd been thinking a lot about Mr. Ryall lately as my own boys started playing hockey this year and I'd volunteered to help coach. I hope to pass along what I'd learned from him to my boys and their teammates. Thanks Coach, I will always remember you. - Posted by: Mike Ames (friend) on: Dec 24, 2016

I met Bill as part of our Palm Springs old timers hockey team, the team then became two teams and we had many great times outside at the Blacktop Bar. He was a great athlete and hockey player. We had many things in common and we became instant friends. Bill had a great sense of humor and a quick wit that always kept everyone amused. He was an integral part of the team and he is already greatly missed. - Posted by: Bob Hoene (Palm Springs "Old Timer" hockey ) on: Dec 24, 2016

Dear Judy and family, We are so so sorry to hear this sad news. We remember Bill as a wonderful neighbor (you too Judy!) and we have fond memories of him sharing his crop of beans and humour. Bill had a good sense of humour and we appreciated all the expertise he was willing to share with us..in particular..gardening! We will always remember his battle of the squirrels..he made us laugh a lot with that story!!! We hope you take comfort in all the love that is surrounding your family during this very tough time. We send you and your children our heartfelt condolences and know that we are thinking of you. Love Cristina and Stan - Posted by: Cristina Molinari and Stan Wiebe (Former neighbors ) on: Dec 22, 2016
