Date of Passing: Mar 10, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRENE DESMET B.A., M.A. 1934 - 2017 It is with great sadness that the family of Rene Desmet announces his passing at St. Boniface Hospital on March 10, 2017. Rene was predeceased by his parents, Madeleine and Karel, his father's second wife, Emily, and his aunt, Jeanne De Foor. Left to survive him are his loving wife Mar, his children Pamela Desmet Franklin (Mark), Leah Ryan (Dion), Daryl (Muriel), his brother Arthur (Elaine), sisters-in-law Ruth August (Gerry), Laura Lucianetti (Arnaldo) and Carol Ison (Dick), his cousin Nancy Silk (Clarence), grandchildren Daniel (Megan), Brennlee (Lucas), Daryl Jr., Amanda (Bryn), Gale (Sean), Dion (Jenna) and great-grandchildren Mallorie, Daniel Jr. and Damien. Rene had a happy and pleasant childhood attending King George V School and Norwood Collegiate. From the University of Manitoba, he got his B.A. and M.A. In 1950, he met the love of his life, Mar Waller, married in 1955 and had three lovely children. Highly regarded by colleagues and students, Rene taught at King Edward, Gordon Bell High and Mulvey Schools. He was a Winnipeg Teachers' Society representative working on many curriculum projects. His teaching years were joyful! Being on the executive board of the Belgian Club, Rene was instrumental in creating Kermis Week which is still a popular event among club members. He organized and ran the Belgian Curling Club for many years at the Heather Curling Club. When Rene retired in 1990, he and Mar moved to their home at Victoria Beach where he became involved with the Senior Scene as President of the club and with fundraising projects. Travelling the world, making great friends and enjoying many attractive places, Mesa, AZ and Puerto Escondido, Mexico were among his favourites. Eventually, time brought their travel to a halt and they were drawn even closer to life at Victoria Beach and their family and friends there. Rene has already been cremated as was his wish. A celebration in his honour will be held at the Senior Scene, 3 Ateah Road, Victoria Beach, Manitoba, Sunday, April 30 at 2:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome. We would like to thank the medical personnel both from Selkirk and St. Boniface Hospitals who provided Rene with the special help he needed during his long illness. Friends and family are welcome to sign the online book of condolences and to share stories about Rene at ejcoutu.com. E.J. COUTU & CO. FUNERAL DIRECTORS 204-253-5086

Mar and family, So very sorry for your loss. Mom and I will miss Rene and his million dollar smile. As a student, I enjoyed his warm, unpretentious teaching style at Gordon Bell, and the many interesting philosophical discussions on world events in the 70s. I will always admire that he was one of the few teachers of that time who felt that learning shouldn't be limited to the classroom. As a result, his field trips were some of the most wonderful learning experiences of my youth. I never forgot our walking tour of the little known historical enclave of Armstrong Point. I was so taken with the area, that decades later it became where I made my home... something I never imagined as a high school student. Many years later, it was a lovely surprise to find that when my parents retired to their place in Grand Marais, they had become friends with you and Rene. Thinking of you at this difficult time. Our prayers are with you. - Posted by: Patricia Kuz, Elaine Kuz (Patricia- former student/friend, Elaine- friend) on: Apr 17, 2017

My condolences to the Desmet Family. Mr Desmet taught me geography and sparked my interest in travel. He took a bunch of us to his cottage in May of 78. It was a lot of fun and I will always remember this. - Posted by: Doreen Hanyecz (Student 1972-1978) on: Apr 09, 2017

Mar and family our deepest condolences. Our fondest memories are while travelling in Portugal we spotted this couple who Rudy recognized from Winnipeg across the square. We connected right away and spent several weeks travelling around Portugal and Spain together. Once we stayed overnight in a "truck stop" hotel and the single beds were so cold so in the morning there was a knock at our door and there was Rene with four steaming coffees...what a welcome that was! Back in Winnipeg we had great visits with them at Victoria Beach and our cottage. We will always remember that radiant smile and his love for life. May God bless you and hold you in his loving arms. Our dearest condolences to Mar and the family. We met Rene and Mar golfing down in Mesa and he became one of our Hockey group. I went to many hockey games with Rene and looked forward to his stories and cheerfulness. He was always positive and upbeat even when the team we wanted to win lost. We will miss his smile and wit. - Posted by: victor and christine basarowich ( friend) on: Mar 18, 2017
