HORST HUBERT HASSELMANN It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Horst H. Hasselmann on Saturday, March 25, 2017. Horst bravely battled Parkinson's disease for the last decade and was granted peace early in the morning after family sat by his side. Horst was predeceased by his parents and brother, as well as his beloved wife of 38 years, Iris Hasselmann (nee Sulymka). Horst was born in Nevigas, Germany on August 17, 1939 and came to Canada at the age of 18. He began his new life in Vancouver, BC but moved to Winnipeg a few years later where he met Iris. Together they had six children: Daria Hasselmann and Scott Baldwin with son Noah Baldwin; Patrick and Cindy Hasselmann with daughters Elke and Mika Hasslemann; Jordan and Sandra Hasselmann with son Jory Hasselmann; Jason Hasselmann and Jessica Jacobson-Konefell and daughters Sarah and Iris; Suzie Brown with sons Oliver and Sebastian; and Rachel Hasselmann and John Mingo with sons Luca and Eli. Horst loved cars and spent his career in the business starting off with the Birchwoood Group in the early 1960s, to owning his own Dealership, Gran Turismo Motors, eventually returning to Birchwood BMW by invitation where he remained until his retirement. He loved to travel, and more than anything loved his family. The joy that he and Iris had hosting their Christmas Eve Open House will always be a wonderful memory for family and friends. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Pembina Place Personal Care Home. During Horst's last hours the care was so loving and compassionate. The staff was supportive to the family and most importantly provided loving, dignified care to our "papa" who lived his life as a true gentleman. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Pembina Place Personal Care Home for the Garden Project or the Parkinson's Society of Manitoba. Thank you again. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place. A reception for sharing stories and fellowship will follow. The interment will take place in the afternoon at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 3990 Portage Ave. E.J. COUTU & CO. Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I remember the Hasselmanns fondly. Their home was always so warm and welcoming and their children (four in number at the time) were a delight to sit with. Their family was a bright spot in the neighbourhood for me. I remember "Mr. Hasselmann" as one of the nicest and coolest men I'd ever met as a child. Years later I visited both Horst and Iris on my return to the neighbourhood as a young mom; they were happy to see me and I spent a wonderful afternoon with them that I long remembered. Deepest sympathies to the family - you all have wonderful memories to cherish. - Posted by: Dolores Rintoul (Former neighbour & babysitter) on: Apr 14, 2017

  • Horst was the E28 M5 of people. An impeccably tailored exterior, propelled through life by a divinely intricate spirit. We drove, dined and laughed together and occasionally argued, mostly about sports and specifically about boxing. It was a privilege to know him. Horst and Iris opened their home and their hearts to an eclectic mix of Winnipeg’s citizenry. An invitation to dinner, or their legendary Christmas Eve open house was to be cherished, because it blended the city's most interesting and accomplished with a couple of generations of River Heights’ youth. Parkinson’s stole his health, but it could not steal the love of his family & friends, nor the admiration of those he employed and the legion of customers he treated like family. “A heart is not judged by how much you love; but by how much you are loved by others.” The Wizard of Oz - 1939 - Posted by: Patrick Miner () on: Mar 30, 2017
