I met Eleanor at Norquay School, Grade II. I was a transfer and the home room teacher, Miss Rolly, introduced me to Eleanor and asked her to show me where to put my things. She was my first friend and my best friend. We walked to and from school together every day and shared our inner most thoughts - picture in your mind two little girls -age 7 or 8 walking home for lunch, heads together, speaking earnestly and in hushed tones. She lived on Grove and I lived on Barber St. She moved to Hallet and we continued to be best friends, graduating from Norquay to St. John's High . Eleanor got a job at the Royal Bank in Winnipeg and I started with CP Rail. We used to send notes to each other from our workplace I don't remember how that worked - there must have been some type of mail service we were able to tap into. Sorrowfully, I let our friendship lapse, but in the corner of my heart I have this special memory of two little girls walking to and from school sharing things we never told anyone else and I know this because that is the way it was. Eleanor used to walk by our house on her way to Ukrainian School and I would be swinging on the gate or hanging on the fence; my grandmother sitting on a bench. Eleanor would stop and address my grandmother first, in Ukrainian, and then we would chat. My grandmother was so impressed with Eleanor I was told to get myself to Ukrainian school or she would escort me. Eleanor was as nice inside as she was outside and I am glad she was in my life. - Posted by: Marie Dary (friend) on: Apr 08, 2017
